How was the diagnosis of Hashimoto's made - did you have an antibody test? If you post your thyroid test results here, someone may be able to offer some suggestions. Make sure you include the lab reference ranges too.

Hi, Welcome to the newsgroup. You will soon find out that many doctors say you are normal but the ranges are large and many people are not normal while still falling within the ranges. I too have Hashimoto's and my numbers were technically normal, but TSH was at the very top (over 5 where 5.5 was the top) and T4 at the very bottom (.46 where .45 was the bottom). The road to wellness is long, but many here have overcome their symptoms. I am fairly new and still trying to get well too. Best of luck, Elizabeth

I'm in the same boat as I have hashi's and a huge goiter but my thyroid is putting up so much of a fight, it won't allow me to tollerate more than 25mcg. 6 years now.. I wonder when it will give up (so this goiter will go away). Richard

Where is T4 relative to lab reference ranges and was Free-T4 or Total- T4 measured? ALso, what about T3? If Free-T4 is near the bottom of the lab reference range then starting synthroid may be useful. If there is goitre starting thyroid is indicated. If T3 is low in range or out of range low, then starting thyroid is indicated. If TSH is high in range then starting thyroid may well be indicated. Sounds like your GP don't know beans about thyroid. This, as far as we can tell is NOT UNCOMMON. Mosts MDs don't know much about thyroid and what they do know is probably WRONG. However, don't try to force everything to be thyroid.
