Hi everyone,

I am new to the group. I found out I have a food allergy to soy about
a year and a half ago. I am finding it very hard to find restaurants
that might have something on the menu that I can eat. I don't eat out
very often, but would like to have the option. Currently, I am making
my own bread, bagels, etc. Everything that they sell in the
supermarket at some form of soy. I was told I could probably have
things with soy oil because the protein would not be present, but then
I got some nasty symptoms just from eating chocolate that has soy
lecithin. I would appreciate any and all help in finding places to
eat and good recipies to make. Being allergic to a come food additive
can be lonely. - Ann

Hi --

There are a couple of resources that may be of help for you. First,
look up the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network
(www.foodallergy.org). It's an excellent resource about food allergies
in general, including product alerts and helpful information.

Second, do a google search for "soy allergy". The first serveral sites
on the list will give you general information about soy allergy, but as
you continue you'll find practical sites put together by individuals
that will help you actually live (shop, go to restaurants, forage) with
a soy allergy.

I'm not an expert on soy allergy, but No Soy
(http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/4620/) looks like a useful web
site, with specific product information.

I hope one of these sites leads you to an online or in-person support
group. The best resource you'll ever find is other people who share
your allergy.

Good luck,

Soy is indeed hard to avoid. And many restaurants use soybean oil because it
is cheap. You need to find a restaurant that cooks from scratch. Avoid the
chain places because they almost always use soy in everything! Ask for a
plain piece of meat like chicken breast or steak with no sauce on it. A
baked potato is probably safe. A salad with no dressing, just lemon, should
be safe. Avoid croutons.
