From: cnc2489 on 10 Dec 2005 22:00 My 15 year old son was just diagnosed with Tourettes about a month and a half ago and i have to say im confused with this diagnosis.A quick history of my son .My son has been diagnosed with Adhd OCD and ODD along with dislexia at the age of 7. he has had many behavioral issues in school and home .He has been on every medication imaginable to help with concentration and then for the behavior .NOTHING has worked. About 5 months ago they diagnosed my son with having bipolar. He was put on medication for that ..they tried many differant cocktails..AGAIN NOTHING worked.. My son went to stay with his uncle for a month and decided to take it upon himself to stop taking his medication. During that time he got violantly ill and had an episode of violant rage.that night he came home and I noticed he had been jerking his neck to the side and was opening his mouth real wide he did this repeatedly. Over the next few days I observed these "tics" and they seem to change. or he added a new one.when he began rolling his eyes I decided it was time to get him in to be seen by a dr. I saw 4 differant dr's. he was finnaly referred to a neurologist . While at the nuerologist they took a brief history and observed his "tic's" one nuerologist immediatly diagnosed him with tourettes then had another nuerologist come in who also aked for a brief history and also observed his "tic's" and he too diagnosed him with having tourettes..My confusion with this diagnosis is that My understanding of tourettes is that you must exhibit both a vocal and a motor tic and that they must be present for at lest a year.which my son has not had any vocal tics that he or we are aware of and these tics are new to us and him... Also that tourettes is hereditary..After much research I have found that no one on either side of our families have had tourettes.. My question is does any one know the differance between tardive dyskinisia and Tourettes ? Could my son have been misdiagnosed? Or does this sound like Tourettes? Any help or comments on this is appreciated. Thanks

So what does a patient who does have Tourette's have during the first X months of the syndrome? Clearly, it is still TS but some people exhibit tics for other reasons and if one makes the diagnosis during that first period, there is simply a higher risk of being wrong. The same situation prevails in some other conditions. One of the criteria for migraine, for example, is at least five headaches lasting between four and 72 hours during one's lifetime. If they meet the remainder of the criteria, the first five are migraine too, but one just can't be sure until the sixth Some experts think that TS, OCD, ADD, and something called oppositional defiant disorder tend to have at least some sommon roots, and run together more often than would be expected by chance. There is a hereditary component to all of them, but the origin may not be immediately obvious. I suspect my TS came through my mother, but I cannot recall anything that I would characterize a tic in her.
From: Jon on 11 Dec 2005 17:51 You would be suprised how subtle vocal tics can be. Our son had vocal tics like throat clearing--we thought he had sinus trouble. I suggest you listen for any repeated sounds (even stuttering a word more than 3 times {wo-wo-wood versus wo-wo-wo-wood, first is stutter, second is a tic} is a tic!) Also, the range of diagnoses you have are consistently in the spectrum of TS. While you may not have picked up the vocal tics because ou are used to them, a new observer might pick them up immediately. I don't believe that's completely true. "wo-wo-wo-wood" could certainly be a stutter, and "wo-wo-wood" could be a tic! Where did you get that distinction?
