I have to buy a laptop in the next couple of days and I'm hoping you
can give me some general advice. I sent you an e-mail but it bounced.
Can you e-mail me? (pfogg(a)email.unc.edu)

I've forwarded this post to John's last known e-mail address, in case he
isn't reading ASAD tonight. I'll let you know if I get a bounce. Let me
know if you hear from him.

In the meantime, I recently bought OS a new laptop, and found the report
on computers in the Sept. 05 issue of Consumer Reports to be somewhat
helpful.

Thanks Nancy :)

I looked at that. My folks get Consumer Reports. I've also consulted
my local geek -- my nephew -- who keeps telling me I need a 64-bit
something or other because everything is going to change in one to
three years apparently, and if I don't get the 64-bit thing I'll need a
new PC then. He goes on to spout a lot of acronyms that make my eyes
glaze over. I went to a few PC stores, but the customer-to-geek ratio
was very high tonight, so I gave up. Also confusing: Consumer reports
doesn't say anything about the 64-bit issue. I just hate hate hate
this. My brain is tired.

Toms hardware Guide has a store now that has the best of breed of the
prefabricated machines like Compaq, HP, Dell etc.

It also has a guide to build your own - quite advanced but well worth
the information and the money savings if you go this way.

In many cases you can buy a machine that has nearly all of the best of
everything but has a slower cpu for only 3 to 5 hundred dollars.

One thing that is important to know. These days the CPU is fast enough
even if you bought the slowest one on the market. For high powered
gaming machines you will want the fastest CPU but it is still not
really necessary unless you plan to compete on the internet or in what
is called a LAN Party.

In general it is the rest of the components of the computer that you
want to pay some attention to. Do you make your own movies? If not
you don't need the DVD-R or DVD-RW, you only need DVD on your computer
if you plan to watch DVD movies on your computer or if you are making
what is called a Media center. A media center is a place in the house
where all of your PC, Theater, Music, Games, Network, Internet, etc are
going to be in one place and controlled by only one computer. The idea
is you can sit at your TV and play the movie, browse the internet, work
on your homework, download music to your MP3 player, play a game etc
all without leaving your chair.

Most people don't need or have the money for that system.

So you don't need a DVD Rom/player on the PC.

What about Photos, do you actively make digital pictures and print them
out?

There are many things to consider if you want to save money otherwise
just buy a prefab and be done with it.

Ask a question I will try to help
