From: rcchess on 11 Oct 2005 09:36 Just enquiring my Mother of 64 years is having missed pulse beats, like boom boom boom boom ....... boom boom boom, just missing one beat. She is relatively fit as does lots of swimming, walking etc, cholesterol may be slightly high, not too much above normal though. It has happened before and I am sure she has been checked (not sure what tests) and Doctor said was ok. Any suggestions? Thanks. Carole

Carole Hi Carole, I was told a year ago by my cardiologist that I was having uneven heart beats, which is called arrythmia and at that time he gave me a 24 hour heart monitor which I had to wear for 24 hours and take it back the next day. He said I had some arrythmia, but not enough for medication but it had to be watched. I was back to my cardio last week for yearly checkup and he detected heart arrythmia, but still not bad enough at this time to need medication (he didn't give me a monitor this time). I have an artificial heart valve, so that part would be different from your mother. But in your mothers case, if it was me, I would ask my doctor to refer me to a cardiologist. It would be well worth it for my peace of mind. Hope this helps :) Mary

I have a blood pressure monitor at home because I have high systolic blood pressure (upper figure is higher than it should be) and it also gives me my pulse reading when I take my blood pressure.I was never any good at taking my pulse rate from my wrist, though maybe your mother is.Does she feel her heart beating unevenly from within herself as we feel our heart racing within ourselves? I am not sure that feeling your wrist for your pulse is the most reliable way to measure your pulse rate (unless its a nurse who is doing it). Is your mother worried about her heart? If so, she might need to ask her doctor if she should see a cardiologist to ease her mind. Mary |
