From: saltcellar on 24 Mar 2007 16:22 Hey there. I had a late onset of Tourette's symptoms at 22, technically past the cutoff point. I suppose I had other involuntary behaviors before that time, but this was clearly something new and dramatic. It happened during a year's meditation retreat, and was part of the reason I left the center there. My guess is that these behaviors had been suppressed before that point by force of will. I had had stress issues all my life, and a constant tension in the gut, so at the time I was relaxing my body and mind with meditation, and right around the time I relaxed the gut (I wasn't even aware of it before then, I thought it was natural) I began to have serious tics. I should note that these tics are definitely Tourettic, although they were initially hesitant to diagnose me because of the late onset. They've evolved over the past four years and now include occasional coprolalic outbursts. My question or query for the group is have any you had a late onset or a situation similar to mine? Much appreciated, Nate.

I know of people who have had late onset (although it sounds like you really had it all along, it just manifested more severely later on, for whatever reason). I've had some practice with meditation and find your story very intriguing. May I ask where and what type of retreat it was? Don't get too anxious about the coprolalia; the less attention you give it the better it should be. Vicious cycle kind of thing.... What helps you now? Keep writing, jo >

There has been much attention in recent years to the effect of streptococcus infection on TS and now including OCD, and ADD. You would probably want to seek diagnosis and treatment of anything resembling a strep infection. Perhaps even chronic suppression therapy, as is done after rheumatic fever, would be worthwhile, though I am not aware of any studies on that.

I was almost 19. I had an overwhelming amount of stress and then I started making noises and started having verbal tics. I am 57 now and still have the same verbal tics that I had when I was 18. Over the years, my symptoms have waxed and waned. Fred

What differentiates the tics of TS from tics of other tics disorder is A) tics of TS are both verbal and motor, B) they are ALWAYS changing and, C) they wax and wan. IOW---no one with a bonafide dx of TS would manifest the same exact tic for 38 years.... Tourette is diagnosed when the anatopical location, number, frequency, complexity, and severity of the tics manifesting is ALWAYS changing.
