From: MikeC on 23 Oct 2007 17:59 Hi, In trying to determine the continuing cause of my wife's chronic diarrhea, cramping, etc. she's undergone a d'zylose test to determine sugar absorption and had a terrible time almost immediately after drinking the d'zylose--very bad cramping and diarrhea which lasted for hours. She's had the saem problem with barium during CT belly scans. Now she's due to take a breath test to determine small intestine overgrowth using a lactulose drink. Anyone know whether she's likely to have the same bad reaction she had to the d-zylose with lactulose? Thanks, Mike
From: Vanny on 23 Oct 2007 18:15 Pure sugar exacerbates diarrhoea, increases stomach acid and increases fermentation in the gut, resulting in cramping and urgency to go. Reflux might occur due to the increased gas in the gut. Lactulose is a laxative so will result in very bad cramping and pains, and the need to have unhindered access to a toilet. Perhaps, you mean the sugar lactose - lactose intolerance test. If she has severe diarrhoea and cramping already then it is very likely that she will have the same reaction with lactose obviously, more so if she is lactose intolerant. If she is lactose intolerant she will have to stop drinking milk and test whether or not she can eat small amounts of certain cheeses (the harder cheeses have less lactose than the soft cheeses). Yoghurt and other fermented drinks have little lactose in them. The diagnostic stage is a very unhinging experience. I wish her all the best and hope that the diagnosis reveals a condition that is curable and that she doesn't land here. However, if she does, she will be looked after here should she wish to contact us.
