From: louise on 18 Aug 2008 12:53 So the diagnosis was finally official - after years of trying to treat an agitated depression, the conclusion is, and I'm pretty sure it's correct, bipolar II and panic disorder. Taking 2mg Klonopin and that works fine. Tried lamictal, got up to only 50mg and became hypomanic. Reduced lamictal to 25mg and slowly added Depakote ER so that now I'm up to 50mg Depression continued. As soon as Lamictal was reduced, I wasn't so angry but the sadness and the depression are severe. I'm also sad for real reasons. I've had psychiatric/psychotherapy help for the greater part of my adult life and no one ever diagnosed me properly, even with a family history to back up such a diagnosis. So, they "kindled" the bipolar with endless rounds of various SSRIs and doled out low doses of benzos when necessary. I also got some benzos on my own to help control what I now understand to be the hypomania from the SSRIs. Wellbutrin was added at 75mg to help with depression - little effect. I can go up to 150mg but am fearful this could create yet another kindling event. There seems to be very little in the way of medications that really hits the depressive episodes of bipolar II if you can't take SSRIs and can't even take a "normal" dose of lamictal. Any ideas? TIA Louise

Life is pretty much same for all people, there is extreme mental pain, and big enjoyment. When i was on mood s Mood stabilizers are not *depressants,* not in any categorical sense. Individual reactions vary widely for any given medication, so it is possible that one person might have a "depressive" reaction to a particular drug. However, mood stabilizers do not in general cause depression. -- Nom dePlume, Ph.D. Why, yes, in fact, I am a rocket scientist. Do not take his advice. If a doctor prescribes you a drug, it is because you are sick, and the benefits outweigh the risks. It is true that we all face some pain in our lives, but "EXTREME mental pain" for an extended period of time is in no way healthy. No one would tell you to walk on a broken leg just so you can later experience the "BIG enjoyment" of walking on a healthy leg. If you walk on that broken leg, you'll never heal. I'm very sorry about your difficulties with bipolar disorder and your medication woes. I can very much relate, if it's any consolation. But stick with it. Keep an open, honest conversation going with you psychiatrist and therapist. Whatever you do, don't listen to people like Alfred, who clearly needs to be reeducated.

I'm sorry you are having a difficult time right now. It sucks when the medication doesn't seem to be helping. It might help if you shared some of the real reasons you are sad, just to get it off your chest.
