From: Peter C on 23 Aug 2008 12:58 A new cholesterol lowering drug which works by blocking chols in the gut has been called into question. It was only approved for use by NICE in England last back-end. Ezitimibe in association with simvastatin shows increase in cancer risk in five year study. The combination is marketed as Vytorin and Inegy. A recent exhaustive study found no carcinogenic proprties in statins so Ezitimibe appears to be the culprit. http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2008/safety08.htm#ezetimibe2

From: Peter C on 24 Aug 2008 06:54 The pharmacology of it from Wikipedia ... "Pharmacology Ezetimibe localises at the brush border of the small intestine, where it inhibits the absorption of cholesterol from the diet. Specifically, it appears to bind to a critical mediator of cholesterol absorption, the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) protein on the gastrointestinal tract epithelial cells[1] as well as in hepatocytes[2]. In addition to this direct effect, decreased cholesterol absorption leads to an increase in LDL-cholesterol uptake into cells, thus decreasing levels in the blood plasma."

Cholesterol-rich bile salts are squirted into the intestine from the liver, then re-absorbed through the intestine lining along with the dietary fats they emulsify. Ezetimibe blocks this reabsorption as well as the absorption of cholesterol from foodstuffs. I can only say it works for me, tot chol down to 4.1 from 5.2. Been taking it since April 07 and no side effects (yet). (Unlike atorvastatin, which turned me into a zombie. And Niaspan, which regularly turned me into a fiery lobster at 2am.) -- vivienne_parish(a)hotmail.com Type 2 since Aug 99/age 48/UK diet only for blood sugar amlodipine 5mg+candesartan 16mg+bendroflumethiazide 2.5mg for BP ezetimibe 10mg for lipids "Nicky" <ukc802466929(a)btconnect.com> wrote in message news:je92b4puq1evf6rb80t0s6vmncr7k0an8i(a)4ax.com... > On Sat, 23 Aug 2008 17:58:27 +0100, "Peter C" <espresso(a)europe.com> > wrote: > >>A new cholesterol lowering drug which works by blocking chols in the gut > > Given that the liver does most cholesterol synthesis - what's the > point? > > Nicky. > T2 dx 05/04 + underactive thyroid > D&E, 100ug thyroxine > Last A1c 5.4% BMI 25 |
