How bad is a creatinne level of 2.0? How long before I will need dialysis?
And most important: Is there anything I can do to slow, stop or reverse the
kidney disease caused by diabetes. Exactly what do I need to do because
whatever it takes I'll do it. My Dr. does not have specifics other than
"watch the protein", stop the Metformin and keep taking the ACE inhibitor.
Many thanks, John

John,
Get a nephrologist that you trust first, that is knowledgeable.
One thing you can look into is a book by Mackenzie Walser called
"Coping With Kidney Disease". It details a very low protein diet that
can slow the progress of the disease for a number of people. It
slowed mine down, though mine was not from diabetes, but from
hypertension. The diet requires that you take an EAA, or Essential
Amino Acid supplement. The book describes it.

Serum creatinine of 2.0 is not bad, but it can keep going up.
I've heard of much higher numbers from some folks. My guess is that
you've gotten on to the problem earlier than some do. Mine was up to
1.9 before I started the diet the book describes. Now I'm down to 1.6
and holding. My belief from the facts I've encountered is that you
want to avoid dialysis for as long as you can without making yourself
sick (check with the doctor). Some here are in favor of jumping into
dialysis quickly, but not me.

Mackenzie Walser was a researcher for Johns Hopkins for 45 years.
The diet in the book came from studies he published which showed good
results with different types of Kidney Disease. Look on the 'net.
The book can be gotten from amazon.com. Look for the 'used and new'
section. The books are really new, but with a lower price. About
$7.50.

Don't panic and don't put all your faith in one school of thought. The one
thing I've learned from this group is to do your own research and draw you
own conclusions. I've been holding at creatin levels of 1.6 for almost 2
years. Nobody can tell you how long you have. That's in Gods hands. Good
luck and keep smiling.
