Next: Which Type Of Sinus Problem Do I Have?
From: grogants on 4 Jan 2006 15:49 Hi all, I'm on day four of my Food Elimination Diet. Glad to say it's the first time I can remember carrying out a New Year's Resolution! I started this diet because of sinus infections. At least 20 times a day I am either blowing my nose, sneezing, hawking a luggie, or swallowing mucous. Sometimes it's infected, sometimes it's not. But it's always there. I also have chronic congestion in my nose, which, besides its sense of smell, I really don't use the thing. So on New Year's Day I began. I'm following a rather stringent diet plan that I found on the internet. ( http://drcranton.com/elimination_diet.htm ) I have broken one of the rules, which is including rice in my diet. Still, it's tough. Called The Caveman Diet. -------------------- here's a brief clip regarding the vegetables/fruit portion: " You may eat sweet potatoes, yams, cabbage, carrots, squash (many varieties), asparagus, cauliflower, avocados, celery, garlic, okra, radishes, greens (beet, mustard, spinach, collards, etc.), cucumbers, eggplant, Brussels sprouts, kale, avocado, broccoli, parsnips, green peppers (not hot pepper or peppery spices), rutabaga, leek, and turnips. Because wheat, corn, rice, rye, oats, barley, buckwheat, millet, and other grains are common causes of allergy, and because all grains belong to related food families, avoid grains while on this diet. This means you must avoid all breads and other foods made with any kind of flour. Although buckwheat, amaranth, milo and quinoa do not belong to the grain family, many grain sensitive people react to those grain substitutes and they should also be avoided. There is no way to make a sandwich, so get used to it. You may eat fresh or fresh frozen fruits (not fruits dried in sugar or packed in sugar or syrup), including bananas, grapes, peaches, pears, pineapple, kiwi, papaya, mangos, melons (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, Crenshaw), cherries, apricots, pomegranates, mangos, coconuts, plums, persimmons, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, or loganberries. Eat only small servings of fruit, as fruits contain lots of natural sugar. Fruit canned in its own juice without sugar or additives are allowed. Avoid fruit juice except in small amounts." -------------------- so far: I HAVEN'T EATEN wheat, sugars, dairy, soy, corn, legumes (including peanuts), white potatoes, tomatoes, beans, citrus, apples hot peppers, onions, beef, chicken (okay i did eat a little yesterday), I HAVE EATEN brown rice, squash, cucumber, spinach, collard greens, garlic, carrots, mushrooms, almonds, rice milk, cranberry juice (no corn syrup added), salmon and yams, and a spelt tortilla. HOWEVER, the spelt tortilla contains spelt glutten, which I'm worried might behave similarly to wheat glutten, which is widely known to thicken mucous, regardless of allergies. I also intend to to drop mushrooms from my diet, since one of the ideas of this diet is to diminish the amount of yeast in the body, mainly in the colon, which can stress the immune system and increase the severity of food allergies and chemical sensitivity. So according to the plan, vinegar, fungus-type foods and yeast shouldn't be consumed. SO WHAT HAVE I LEARNED SINCE DAY FOUR? After eating I'm never tired, very full, or fatigued. Probably all this variety of *whole* foods is more completely satiating my hunger. My urine is clearer, my poop is softer, and best of all, my mucous is much clearer and thinner. It's running freely, almost llike I have a post-nasal drip, except I'm not sick. The only drawback, which is by no means minor, is this pounding headache! Uf! It lasted the whole second day. So I cooked a plain chicken breast and had a spelt tortilla. The headache calmed down overnight. Yesterday and today I didn't have any chicken or spelt. I had salmon last night and today (4th day) with the veggies listed above. And today the headache is back. I've learned to accept a stuffed up nose over the last 28 years, but headaches I am not accustomed to. I know I have a long way to go, but does anyone have any suggestions? I hate to pop a bunch of aspirin all day. I never get headaches and this is clearly connected to the abrupt halt of my all-american diet. Anyway, thanks for reading, and I'd appreciate any sort of comments or sharing of similar experiences. And if anyone knows about the relationship of blood typesto diet, I should also mention I'm type O. Thanks again! Ouch, Todd
From: Andean Sergio on 4 Jan 2006 16:55 About the headache- try eating quinoa, which is high in magnesium. Ask the store if they know who supplies their quinoa. Mountain peoples and Quinoa Corp quinoa I am sertain are processed in plants that are gluten-free. If you come up w/ another name I can tell you if they are gluten-free or not. -Sergio grogants wrote: And today the headache is back. From: Brad_Chad on 4 Jan 2006 19:25 I skipped the elimination diet. I got a blood test from Immuno Laboratories (www.immunolabs.com). They told me that I was sensitive to about 18 foods. They may not be 100% accurate, but they were close enough. I then started keeping a food diary and through the process of elimination I figured out the rest. Brad_Chad
