I'm a 23 year old male, and my symptoms started a few months back. I
will feel a slight pain/pressure/discomfort on the area of my
anus/lower colon for a few days. The area is more sensitive to
pressure, and may hurt slightly if pushed on in the right way. During
this time, my bowel movements are more frequent and smaller, I'm more
gassy, and the stool is much slimmer than usual. After a few days of
this, the soreness will go away and my bowel movements will return to
normal.

The one thing that I'm worried about is the soreness around the area of
the lower part of the colon. All my other symptoms looked like it
would be IBS, but since I've never read anything about soreness around
the lower colon area on any site, I figured I'd try to post and see if
anyone else might know a bit more.

You might want to get checked for diverticulosis/diverticulitis.

The pain symptoms you described are not really typical for most of the
folks with uncomplicated IBS. I think you'll need to see a doctor
because the possible causes include things that are not self-treatable.
The doctor will also have to determine if the change in bowel
habit/consistency/frequency is actually being caused by something else
(for example, a partial rectal prolapse).

By the way, most of us folks received our IBS diagnosis AFTER going
through a lot of tests to eliminate other possible causes. That's just
part of the game.
