Someone on a low-carb group stated this in regard to my slow thyroid:

"You could encourage your thyroid by eating a brazil nut a day - selenium is
important in the T3->T4 conversion, and a single nut provides all you need."

Do you eat brazil nuts and find them beneficial?

I eat them for that purpose and so do others here. Just don't O.D. on the
stuff if you buy it in pill form. I eat 2 or 3 brazil nuts a day.. its more
natural.

If you're hypo or lacking selenium in your diet, its something to consider.
But I don't like the idea of "encourage your thyroid" coming from a low-carb
newsgroup. Don't let them convince you to start taking T4 or crazy herb
cocktails for your thyroid, because the next group you might be stopping
could be sci.med.cardiology. FYI. Just be healthy but don't over do it.

I take a multiple vitamin and I looked and it has Selenium in it. The
One-a-Day vitamins (Weight Smart formula) has 70 mcg of Selenium in it. Do
I need more? Do you happen to know how much a brazil nut offers?

Its my understanding that brazil nuts can contain anywhere from 75mcg to
140mcg of selenium each. The recommended daily intake is 75mcg. I've read
that going over 400mcg for a long time can be bad and some on this group say
they've had problems with more than 200mcg. I guess it depends on how much
selenium you have already. You can get a hair or urine analysis test to
check your selenium level. I don't know exactly how accurate these tests
are, but it can give you a good idea. If its around 2 standard deviations
under/over then you could guess that its either too high or too low.

I don't think most "low carb" groups or people would do that. The rare exceptions will
always be present. So let's keep balance in these issues.

Thyroid meds are NOT a way for normal people to lose weight easy. HYPO-s will find
proper levels of thyroid hormone replacement necessary in order to lose weight usually.
But for people with intact thyroid glands, thyroid meds are NOT a magic weight loss
supplement. Nor are things which, in proper levels, aid in proper metabolism of
thyroid hormones, such as selenium.
