From: mikes on 19 Apr 2008 23:00 Hi all, I have a question. What is experience of others with influence of pills (both levothyroxine and armour) on appetite, weight, glucose in blood? I've noticed that my appetite has reduced a bit after starting the medication. I've almost lost my "sweet tooth", much lower cravings for candies and cookies. But there is no positive effect on my weight. Perhaps I've even gained somewhat, and not in proper places, mostly abdominal (male, 53). Does thyroxine increase blood sugar? My glucose tests show now bigger numbers, borderline and a bit above. Thanks.

My appetite has increased a bit compared to pre-diagnosis. > I've almost lost my "sweet tooth", much lower cravings for > candies and cookies. I never did have a sweet tooth, but by the time I was diagnosed I couldn't get through the evening without a good dose of very dark chocolate. Since being on meds, I never 'crave' chocolate any more (although I do still enjoy it every now and then). > But there is no positive effect on my weight. > Perhaps I've even gained somewhat, and not in proper places, mostly > abdominal (male, 53). I too have gained a bit of weight, but I think some of it is probably muscle rather than excess fat. Looking back I can tell that I was not so much slim as muscle wasted :-( > Does thyroxine increase blood sugar? My glucose > tests show now bigger numbers, borderline and a bit above. I don't know. I did check my own blood sugar levels for a while in the early days of being on meds, but haven't done so for a long time now. I don't recall the detail, but my doc said my last blood glucose test was just fine.

I quess my cravings could be related to the cortisol swinging somehow (e.g. Hashi's thyroiditis caused random surges of thyroxine, which exhausted adrenals). Now, when my thyroid is controlled by pills, the levels of both thyroxine and cortisol can be relatively stable. > I too have gained a bit of weight, but I think some of it is probably > muscle rather than excess fat. Are you absolutely sure about muscles? I'll keep my fingers crossed then. I've noticed that my exercise endurance has increased on meds.
