From: trailboss on 16 Aug 2005 17:53 My buddy has a prosthetic guy, since he lost his leg, and he wants to have a "spare" leg built. He is paying cash for the components, and the knee is an otto bock 3R80...pretty durable looking knee (I went with him). The prosthetic guy wants to charge him 1200 bucks for the knee (doesnt look used)...is that fair? Seems to work fine. My bro wants to do everything but the socket himself. Actually he is considering a career in prosthetics, since he lost his leg in a motor vehicle accident and has become very acquainted with the field, personally. So he wants to experiment and work with the stuff...what do you think of price? Thanks for any insight.
From: Glenn Woodell on 16 Aug 2005 22:07 Sounds correct to me. I did not say reasonable, but correct. That stuff is quite expensive. Is he able to purchase this stuff outright? Is he getting it from a prosthetist? I'm surprised that he can do that. From: alcarm1964 on 17 Aug 2005 13:03 That $1200 sounds about right...btw, I've had that exact knee for a little over 3 years now....LOVE IT! Trouble free, easily adjusted, can't ask for anything more. Best of luck to your buddy.
From: trailboss on 17 Aug 2005 16:52 Thanks, I'll convey you folks wishes to him. Luckily he had 250,000 dismemberment policy, so he sorta cleaned up....so he wants to get on with his life and is seriously considering going to school for prosthesis tech or something along those lines. His prosthetic guy is my prosthetic guy...I've had him for 8 yrs. all he said my bro needs is a script from a doctor and he can sell him the knee....no problem...the doctor is cool with it too.... BTW, I have that knee as well. Im a pretty big guy, 6 foot, 200lbs, and hard on everything...the c-leg just doesnt look like something I wanna take a chance on...so I'm sticking with this rugged knee for safety....I fell down a flight of stairs on this thing, landed on the knee full on with all my weight...just a little scuff on the plastic cover over the knee....I wonder how the c-leg would have stood up to that! Although I am not trying to judge that leg, as many seem happy with it. Oh well, thanks for the heads up! <alcarm1964(a)hotmail.com> wrote in message news:1124298233.047267.28220(a)g44g2000cwa.googlegroups.com... > That $1200 sounds about right...btw, I've had that exact knee for a > little over 3 years now....LOVE IT! My insurance would've paid for a c-leg but I just thought it would be too much trouble. I've seen folks doing real well with it but I'm not the type who would make sure things are charged up all the time and all that. If I recall, the entire cost for my knee, socket, foot, bla bla bla was about $15k. It's been right around 3 years now and I haven't made a pros vist at all. I used to have to get my other hydraulic knees serviced once a year...so far so good with this one. |
