i have mainly suffered from constipation/ bloating ibs symptoms but
recently have progressed to the alternating symptom type. constipation/
bloating ibs caused me to feel quite lousy sometimes, mainly starting
in early evening and progressing until bedtime. since the altenating
form began, i have really strong flu-like symptoms that at first began
in the early evening and progressed just like previously.
unfotunately, after two to two and a half months of the alternating
variety, the flu like symptoms have gotten extremely worse and can
start as early as 45 minutes after awakening progressing in intensity
throughout the day so much so that i can barely stand it by noon. i
know alcohol is one of the worst things i can do and is adding to the
problem, but it's the only relief i can find. diet/exercise and
prescriptions (hyoscyamine) haven't helped.

how can flu like symptoms be a product of ibs and has anybody had this
problem and any success treating them?

miserable and hoping for some information,
sach

Wait until you get the constipation-like bloating and diarea at the same
time. As for the other things:

Flu like symptoms are not uncommon. Any infectioncan cause these common
effects.

Hyosciamine Sulfate is also prone to cause a lot of side effects. These
can include feverish ;ight headedness, sore throat, blurry vision...

Ask your Dr. about other options like Bentyl (dicyclomine) or Elavil.
There are a number of tricyclic antidepressant which are used for ibs.

You really should discuss alcohol use with your Dr., this can really
mess you up, causing motility problems on top of your existing ones. The
only thing that is improved by alcohol is methyl poisoning. If you need
a pain killer, ask for one.
