From: EFIS2 on 19 Jul 2007 14:00 Dear all, I have some questions regarding my complicated situation. I have insulin resistance and must follow a high protein diet. However, I am having symptoms when I eat most protein sources and this is really worrying me as I need to eat this food to control my insulin levels. First of all, I am not sure this is a food allergy but it probably could be. I get a swelling/lump feeling on the right side of my throat in different places (sometimes high near jaw/ sometimes near laranx) when I eat many foods, nearly everything i eat that is protein cuases this besides a few meats (beef/pork). Somtimes I get the same feelings when I eat foods I have rarely ate in my life (i used to be vegetarian) such as lamb or turkey. The main foods that seem to cause problems are soy, eggs, chicken, maybe fish, hot drinks - sometimes drinking hot water or herbal teas cause the same symptoms. I also have a dairy allergy but that causes nasal problems only. I also have other mild allergy symptoms to foods like almonds and peanuts occasionally, not allways. Again, so many foods are causing this that I'm becoming alarmed that I will not have anything to eat, do you understand? I have used a peak flow meter when I get these symptoms and I don't have any reduction in air flow levels, so I don't know if it is really restricting my air flow or not. I have been to an ENT when normal and he doesn't see anything wrong with my glands. I am taking a course of LDA shots with my allergist and so far no change in the food allergies, i'm only on my second shot- however asthma has improved (enviornmental allergies). He tells me that allergy tests wouldn't be worth it as he feels they can't be really trusted and wouldn't help him. I had a blood test two years ago with a regular doctor and I had high readings for dariy, eggs, but not for any meats or fish or soy. I get heart burn and indegestion also, is there any possibility that this neck thing would be caused by acid reflux? What would you suggest given that I need to eat protein sources for my insulin/hypoglycemia and now I don't know if I can - I feel very very anxious. I'm worried I'll end up with diabetes because I'll only be able to eat carbs/fats. I must repeat that my pulse never goes too high when I experience such symptoms and I never have felt that I couldn't breath, although the neck thing gets pretty horrible and again, its only on one side (right) always - its very annoying. It seems exacerbated by swallowing. Should I encourage my allergist to do skin tests or blood tests even though he prefers to wait and see what happens with the LDA shots? Anybody here doing LDA shots? If so, are you doing the special diet. I'm not, but I may consider doing it if it will help with the allergies. I really appreciate the help Best Aqua
From: nikzen on 20 Jul 2007 00:44 Hi Aqua, My main suggestion would be to seek out meats that are both grain fed and organic. Alot of people react to the hormones, preservatives and pesticides that are found in most of the readily available produce these days! I would also avoid corn syrup as much possible. You can find high quality products that avoid the corn syrup and hormonal meats :) at Farmer's Markets and various health food stores. There are also online suppliers who deliver, but they can be a little pricey. I am very "anti" allergy shots myself. If you are already taking insulin shots, I wouldn't mess with your body anymore than necessary. Your body is very good at telling you what it can and can't handle, so you should listen to it and treat it with great respect! I hope this was helpful. Good luck! Although not diabetic, I am allergic to meat, fowl, fish, seafood, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, cereals, grains, root veggies, most fruits amd most spices. What's left? Non-root veggies like zuchininis, opo squash, cabbage, collards, celery and apple. For proteins, I supplement with free-form amino acids. It is possible that your condition is caused by chronic stress/anxiety along with factors such as genes, toxins, pollutants, heavy metals, etc. This can cause disregulation of your endocrine system. You could try the following: 1. Stress Mgmt: Prayer, meditation, yoga, ti chi, stretching, walks, sauna, dancing, singing, etc. 2. Hormone Replacement Therapy (ie prednisone and thyroid) to compensate for damaged glands, usually adrenals.

What you're describing doesn't fit the symptom pattern of a food allergy (*some* allergy maybe, not *all* of it). The most likely syndrome to me is globus hystericus, an anxiety disorder which is unpleasant but treatable. BUT you need to see a general practitioner, as those symptoms can be caused by anything from lupus to oesophageal cancer. practitioner as there are ser ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 <http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/> for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557
