From: Lost on 7 Nov 2006 07:50 I have just recently lost my best friend. My minature collie "Bear". I had him for ten years. I loved him so much and I miss him so bad and I just can't get over the fact that he is suddenly gone. Everything I done he was there, I am to blame for his sudden loss of life and I can't get over it, I feel so horrible and get so upset everytime I think of him. Everyone tells me time will heal, I am still waiting for that call from the Vets to say his ashes have arrived.

Just about this time last year I lost my beloved Australian Shepherd Zephyr. He was just over 13 years old. I still feel the pain and emptiness of his death as if it were only yesterday. Having Bear's ashes will bring some comfort, a sort of closure ... but only time will heal that awful hurt. I can't tell you when it will stop ... each loss is different, each person grieves differently. I have to say the one thing that has helped greatly is having Odin (my 11 year old) Aussie there to love and go through those first painful days with me. I also know that being able to open your heart to another dog helps as well. There is no time table for that ... but only you will know when you are ready to welcome another furry buddy into your life. My former veterinarian (now retired) once said after I lost my first dog over 15 years ago that people don't stop making friends in their life time. That when the time is right to make room for another dog in my life. He said not look for a replacement for the dog I'd lost, but to make a new friend and enjoy that friends special qualities. I did that with Zephyr ... now I do have a new companion in my life a sweet little year old Aussie named Cadence.
