From: Michelle Duford on 21 Feb 2006 21:38 I have noticed that supplementation with Selenium seems to be making quite a difference. My naturopath gave me some herbal supplements For two: Iodine 158 mcg 105% Daily Value Magnesium 100 mg 25% Daily Value Selenium 140 mcg 245% Daily Value Guggul Gum Resin 248 mcg Fucus herb Fucus 272mg Taking this stuff (3 per day) made me quite edgy almost hyper I think. Anyway some smart person here (Kevin likely), suggested that I switch to just selenium. So I quit the supplements for two weeks, I started feeling tired and achy pretty quick. I started the Selenium on Sunday, approx 200mcg per day. Today, Tuesday I am feeling quite a bit better already. I don't know if I am imagining things, but what does Selenium do? For example, I am going to bed at 10pm and am wide awake at 5am. Generally, I struggle to get out of bed by 6:30. Does one take Selenium on a continual basis or does one build up ones "stores" and then cut back? I am just wondering about long term effects as I have read that there are side effects of overdosing on selenium. Do it effect ones levels for testing? Anyway, if this continues, I will be quite choked (but happy). I have been hypo for 6 years an NO ONE ever suggested Selenium supplementation before my naturopath did last month. Thanks again for the info. Michelle.

From: John Riggs on 22 Feb 2006 01:36 I think the short answer she was looking for was that selenium aids in conversion from T4 to T3. There are some articles in jcem. there should be something in www.pubmed.com . My antibodies went down, and the ft3 went up slightly. I think one shoud keep taking the selenium. (maybe try a lower dose) nora |
