From: Kurt Pearson on 30 Aug 2008 01:19 I know a DRE, ejaculation or bike riding can alter a PSA result in a man before having any type of treatment for PCa, but what about after treatment? The reason I ask is my recent PSA result is 0.4 up from 0.2 which is where it has been for over a year. A few days to a week before I had my blood drawn for the PSA test, I was going thru some pretty bad bowl trouble and maybe a urinary infection. I am post 4 years Brachy and EBRT. Thanks so much to all who reply from a long time lurker. DX 07/05/2003 @ 46

Not a direct answer to your question, but nevertheless relevant: Walsh says that if your PSA is up after treatment (he discusses surgery), the first thing to do is have it checked again. "PSA measurements are tricky and some labs are not able to measure PSA at its lowest ranges." In your case case, obviously, you should make sure the infection is gone before the repeat test. > > > DX 07/05/2003 @ 46 > > > >

Walsh's comment is directed towards those who presumably have no prostate tissue left, that is not the case with brachy patients and the same issues you mentioned in your original post still apply. For peace of mind, repeat the test after any infection is cleared up. Most of us have had a little bounce and it is unsettling. Tom

Long time no read. Hasn't it been 5 years.... and one day? I suspect after Brachy there is enough prostate tissue left to cause elevated PSA when it's irritated. I certainly wouldn't hang my hat on it, but I think it is possible. You haven't reported in since Feb '04. What has your PSA history been over the run? That might be a better indicator than what it was last year and what it is this year. -- PSA 16 10/17/2000 @ 46 Biopsy 11/01/2000 G7 (3+4), T2c RRP 12/15/2000 G7 (3+4), T3cN0M0 Neg margins PSA <.1 <.1 <.1 .27 .37 .75 PSAD 0.19 years EBRT 05-07/2002 @ 47 PSA .34 .22 .15 .21 .32 PSAD .056 years Lupron 07/03 (1 mo) 8/03 and every 4 months there after PSA .07 .05 .06 .09 .08 .132 .145 PSAD 1.4 years Casodex added daily 07/06 PSA <0.04, <0.05, <0.04, <0.04, <0.1 2/12/08 Illegitimati non carborundum

However, your bowel and urinary troubles make me suspect inflammation in the prostate as a likely cause - possibly due to infection, possibly due to the other possible causes of prostatitis. If I were you, I would want to watch this closely, but not assume the worst and not begin any other treatment unless you see a continual and sustained increase in PSA. Best of luck with it. |
