From: DianeLeMasson on 9 Jul 2008 13:20 Hi For some time I have been having this strange sensation in the front lower part of my neck. Hollow area below your adams apple, if that's the right term. I have no idea if it's related to a Thyroid condition or not. If it is I'm wondering if anyone else has or is experiencing the same. This usually only happens when I am exerting myself in some form of activity. It's hard to explain what that feeling is so I'll give it my best. During whatever it is I'm doing it feels as if it's difficult to breathe, like someone has put their hand, finger, on that area of my throat. At least that's what it feels like. My lower jaw feels sort of tight as well. I find if I try to relax & put my fingers to & apply pressure to that area the sensation goes away & I'm find. I can't quite explain this sensation but to say like my heart beating or a thumping, only when I am touching that spot. And this doesn't happen everytime I am active which is strange. This has been happening for some time, even before I was told I was hypo. However since the thyroid gland is in that area I'm now wondering if it could be related. My doctor is away so I can't even discuss this with her. So if anyone could give me any insight of what is happening to me, in regards to if this is related or not I would be so appreciative. Thank you! Diane
From: Dee on 9 Jul 2008 16:57 Hi Diane, You should see your doctor when she gets back. You said you have hypothyroidism; do you have Hashimoto's? I do (ie. my thyroid gland is basically under attack); and I have a sore throat most of the time, plus I get a feeling of tightness in my throat (with some difficulty swallowing) at times, and the sensation bothers my breathing at times, too. Probably not the same thing you're describing, though... Seems to me there are three likely things. First, an infection. Some of what you mention sounds like 'swollen glands' in your neck. Quite likely something that will pass in time. Second, an allergy. This year in particular (in England, this is) I have been getting feelings not too far away from what you describe. At its worst, there is a sort of 'neck closing in on itself' feeling which can be relieved by light finger prssure around the bottom of my neck. Taking an antihistamine tablet (I have been using Loratadine) clears it up in about a quarter of an hour and lasts a day. Third, your thyroid. Many people report all sorts of neck discomfort/pain. You could have all sorts of changes to the shape of your thyroid. It could be slightly goitrous. It could have grown some sort of nodule. It could be shrinking. It could be pressing on a blood vessel. Fourth, some combination of the above. As hypothyroidism is well known for changing sensitivities (e.g. unmasking or causing allergies and intolerances), seems entirely possible that you could have slight thyroid swelling and discomfort plus an allergic reaction. Or an infection. Or all three. Had your doctor been available, I would have suggested that you see her and get an ultrasound scan asap. That should be able to see a lot of the possible problems. As she is not, I suggest that you try a small dose of Loratadine (or similar) - not sure of your brand names for this. Play safe - maybe try half a tablet? And read the patient information leaflet first. :-) You might also try whatever mild approach to throat infections you are happy with. Some sort of gargle? I know little of such remedies. Hashimoto's is the name given to autoimmune thyroid disease. The body's immune system attacks the thyroid. Sometimes a distinction is drawn between goitrous and atrophic forms. Goitrous causes the thyroid to increase in size. Atrophic causes the thyroid to whither. However the term Hashimoto's is widely used for both types without any clarification as to which sort. (The atrophic form used to be called Ord's - but that seems to have dropped out of use entirely.) The end result is that the thyroid stops working. On the way to failing, the thyroid can do funny things like suddenly releasing some thyroid hormone inappropriately. If you have not had one, you should have an antibody test. That will check that the cause of your thyroid problems is autoimmune. If it is, little will be done - but at least you know. Don't ignore this. Do go to see your doctor as soon as reasonably practical. -- Rod Hypothyroidism is a seriously debilitating condition with an insidious onset. Although common it frequently goes undiagnosed. <www.thyromind.info> <www.thyroiduk.org> <www.altsupportthyroid.org>

Later it will be a swelling, a nodule of sorts, a tumor and matted down to the surrounding tissue (as it seems to be now). If your Doctor is away on vacation for a few weeks, and your Doctor don't have a back up, another Doctor to take your call ... then get a better Doctor is my recommendation. I would think it is time for you to talk to a surgeon ... get this thing cut out after a few more test so you are not going in blind. Get an I-131 test out of Nuclear Medicine, a cat scan would be nice, and of course look for cancer antibodies ... check your Sed Rate on the blood test, if you Sed Rate is off, then you have something 'smoldering' away in there. Your Defense Structure is creating your saddness, casualties, and regrets like this .. in the effort to make you cry out the bitter salty tears. If you make sure not shed a drop, it gets worse instead of making you better it makes you ill. Just like swallowing a Grim Pill from the Pill Grims. Good luck ... you got some work to do if you want to stay alive. It is a simple process that hurts like hell as this is purgatory where you must go through your pain to find happiness here. sumbuddie wear blind sea :/
