From: Mitesh P on 29 Oct 2005 01:01 I have often seen people rush to vitamin shops to buy Vitamin C pills, or other specific vitamins, and they still continue to ingest a multi vitamin. My question is, is it possible to take in too much of a specific vitamin, and if so can there be any adverse effects or does the body just flush them out? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

From: John Sankey on 31 Oct 2005 08:04 There are a few vitamins which produce health problems with overdose - the oil-soluble ones that are stored in their oil-soluble form in our bodies. I'm not aware of any water-soluble vitamin that causes health problems in excess. A & D are the most documented problem vitamins in overdose. Look for TUL's Tolerable Upper Limits in non-commercial listings of vitamins. For the most part, excesses of the others simply end up in the sewer system!

I recall that Reinhold Vieth, one of the leading vitamin D researchers, has said that only to achieve physiological levels of circulating vitamin D - 25(OH)D - produced by sunlight, we have to take 100 ?g vitamin D. And that is far from being toxic. Personally I take 25 ?gs daily in winter time. Vitamin D deficiency is fairly common. -- Juhana
