I saw my doctor this week. She had been to a seminar about pain. One
discussion was led by a doctor that had found a connection of muscle
pain to low Vitamin D levels. He first found it in people that had
taken statin drugs for cholestrol problems. The muscle pain is a side
effect. He did blood tests on these people and the common thread was
the low levels of vitamin D. Then he started to test others with
muscle pain....EX: fibromyalgia and MS.
He was finding the same thing.....low Vit D levels. My doctor took
blood to test my levels of Vit D. Have not heard anything yet, but
find it interesting.
Anyone else ever heard of this?

Just goes to show how up to date we are and most doctors are not.

I lowered my cholesterol by diet because my doctors exact quote was "I would
not put you on Lipitor because of the possible muscle pain side effects.
It's my job to make you better, not cause more pain".

Yeah, there was a study that made the news that showed low levels of
Vit D can cause pain. I've got the original study and the editorial
that accompanied it (Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Dec 2003 Vol 78) as well
as a letter to the editor in front of me. The participants in the study
did not meet the ACR definition of FM so the study really says nothing
about FM. It won't hurt to take a vitamin D supplement if anyone wants
to give it a try.

This is a quote from a letter to the editor,

Vitamin D Deficiency is Not Associated With Nonspecific Musculoskeletal
Pain Syndromes including Fibromyalgia

Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Dec 2004;79(12):1585-1591.

"In conclusion, my study did not confirm an increased prevalence of
vitamin D deficiency in a population of white patients who live at a
latitude similar to that of Minneapolis (where the original study by
Plotnikoff was done). My study did not confirm a difference in vitamin
D levels between patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain who fit the
ACR criteria for FM and those who did not not. Vitamin D levels are not
a marker for chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain. Finally, there is
no reason to suspect that vitamin D therapy would benefit this group of
patients, and the results of the few selected patients I treated with
vitamin D support this notion."
