From: Straight.Delhiite on 1 Mar 2007 10:24 1. I want to know how common is it to use a catheter on male patients to urinate them, when a man has surgery to put a rod into his calf- bone in case of a fracture, in India? 2. Who puts in this catheter? 3. Is it put while the patient is conscious? Is it taken out when the patient is conscious? 4. What is the exact procedure of putting this in and out? Does the patient urinate on his own with the catheter or does he need the nurse's help? 5. In India is this job done by female nurses or male? 6. Is it important to put in he catheter? I would like answers from surgeons/ nurses/ as well as patients. My friend had this operation and I'm very jealous of someone seeing him like this. I want to know how this would have happened but can ask him. Thanx for your help, I'm really anxious!

Unless the patient has known urinary tract problems it should not hurt. There are anesthetic gels that can be used. I have been conscious every time it was inserted and removed. On two occasions, I removed it at home by myself. It did not hurt me at all. > >4. What is the exact procedure of putting this in and out? Does the >patient urinate on his own with the catheter or does he need the >nurse's help? The catheter is lubricated with a sterile lubricant and inserted into the penis. The nurse holds the penis and straightens it out to make insertion easier. The catheter is slowly fed until the nurse can tell she is in the bladder. A small balloon at the bladder end is filled with a saline solution via a small second tube built in to the catheter. This is to keep the catheter from falling out. The catheter may be taped to the penis to keep the collection bag from pulling on the penis. Once it is in place, the bladder is continuously emptied. > >5. In India is this job done by female nurses or male? I have had both male and female nurses perform the procedure. It did not matter to me and it did not violate my religious beliefs. I would think that any religious requirements would be honored except in real emergencies. > >6. Is it important to put in he catheter? I would guess the patient may not be able to get up to urinate after surgery. The anesthetic might prevent urination. It beats bedpans! > >I would like answers from surgeons/ nurses/ as well as patients. > >My friend had this operation and I'm very jealous of someone seeing >him like this. I suspect that hospital procedures are similar in India, depending upon facilities and availability. > >Thanx for your help, I'm really anxious!
