It provides lubrication that lasts much longer than lotion and its ingredients actually help reduce the swelling that you might have. I don't use a liner but I get it occasionally at the top of my socket especially if I go in the water and wear a wetsuit. I'll line the problem areas a bit as a preventative. Glenn
