We are thinking of buying of Tempur pedic type matteress.

If anyone in this group is using one...
Would you pls let us know your thoughts.

Tempur pedic is quite expensive. We have heard that many companies
have very similar products in the marketplace and at more reasonable
prices.
Can anyone who has experience / is knowledgeable about this, pls let
us know.

What brand is the best value for money ?

We need a Queen and live in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA.
Any particular place that has the best deals ?

Any thoughts/ suggestions/ ideas /pointers would be highly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Ayesha Hill

FWIW, I bought a 2" Serta california king topper for $80 from overstock.com.
You can buy the 3" for $130 or the 4" for $180. My mattress was already on the
firm side, so adding the topper was a lot cheaper than doing a whole mattress.
Because my bedroom is on the cold side, the foam can be somewhat stiff when I
get into bed.

Before the Serta, I could not spend more than about 5 hours in bed before my
back started killing me. Now, I can do 6 hours, and every so often 7 hours, so
it does give me an hour more of sleep.

Several years ago I compared Tempur-pedic to Select-Comfort, the air
bed. There were two factors that sent me to the air bed.

1. The T-P is said to develop a memory over time and not rebound to
its original shape. I have two T-P pillows that do this. I use one
until it gets scrunched, then switch. They eventualy return to shape,
but I don't know how you'd do it with a mattress.

2. The T-P is said to hold heat, which I am sensitive to.

I bought the air bed and it was the best investment I ever made.

Prices were comparable, though I did have to buy a platform bed to
hold the air bed.

It is not recommended to use a heated mattress pad or electric blanket with
any type of foam mattress or topper, as it will cause the foam to soften and
lose support. This includes the Tempur Pedic. If you are partial to one of
these items you may not be happy with a foam mattress or topper.

I do not own either but have slept on both the Tempur Pedic and the Select
Comfort beds. I liked the Select Comfort bed quite a bit better as I could
make adjustments on the fly. The downside is it can take awhile to find the
right setting that allows you to sleep all night. Hopefully not too long
but sometimes it is trial and error.

On the memory foam (including Tempur Pedic) you will have to learn a new way
to roll over, it doesn't work the same as on a regular mattress. Hard to
describe, but everyone I know that has slept on memory foam topper or
mattress has said the same thing. Because you 'sink' you can't move as
easily. It isn't necessarily uncomfortable, just unsettling until you get
accustomed to it.

I've been sleeping on a TempurPedic mattress for years, and I love it. Yes,
it takes a little getting used to, as it takes a little more effort to roll
over in this bed, but the point of the TP mattress is that you don't *have*
to move around much while you're sleeping because your body is fully
supported by the mattress, keeping you comfortable in whatever position
you're in. In fact, the first night I slept in my bed, I swear I didn't
move an inch - woke up several hours later in the same position in which I
had fallen asleep, and the covers were not ruffled. I do move around a bit
more these days while I'm sleeping, but I'm used to rolling over in it, so
it's not a problem. (Caveat: I adjusted to my CPAP therapy pretty easily,
when many don't; maybe I'm just more adaptable overall, and YMMV when it
comes to getting used to something new.)

FWIW, I've not had any issues with the mattress retaining body heat or
sagging, either. It looks like it did the day I bought it - no sag at all.
I've not had any "compression" issues with my TP pillow, either.

I don't know that I'd try a "knock-off" of the TP. My feeling is that the
knock-offs employ similar technology but cut corners to reduce the price so
they can compete with TP. When the time comes for me to replace my current
mattress, I'll likely purchase another TP.

My best advice: Go and lay down on each mattress you're considering and see
how it feels to you. Good luck. :-)
