Suction or Pin/Lock System? That is the question... Everyone please jump
in...

Similarities pertain to both AK and BK (transfemoral and transtibial)
amputees. Has anyone tried both systems for any period of time?

It would be interesting for anyone reading this to note the pros and cons
they have experienced with either type of prosthetic limb suspension system.

Ideas for comment:
- ease of donning
- pain
- pistoning
- limb falling off
- skin shear
- foliculitis, skin irritation, pressure ulcers, skin health
- weight changes (volume fluctuations)
- longevity of fit without recasting or refitting
- overall ease of use
- sweating, perspiration

I have used only a locking distal pin-lock system for over ten years. While
the prosthetic practitioner community seems to favor suction systems for
overall skin health and circulation, I have had no problems with my pin
system.

Pros: 1. Easy to get on and off
2. Never comes off by accident
3. Comfortable

Cons:
1. Some "pistoning" during heavy perspiration
2. Some occasional "skin shear" (

3. Pin and lock need to replaced every few years due to wear

I've never known anything but a suction system in almost 25 years so
as you can guess I have had no problems with it. I use a donning
sleeve now which took a while to get used to but the fit it right on.
Absolutely no slippage once the skin gets tacky after a few minutes.

I only get skin shear on rare occasions, usually when I'm a little
overweight. This one problem is what keeps my weight so steady.

To speed recovery of whelts like that, apply some Preparation H or
similar tissue shrinkage ointment to it. It will immediately provide
relief to the shear and over night it will shrink the swelling
dramatically over the use of nothing at all.

I use a suction prosthesis and have never used a pin / lock system. When the
VA Hospital had my prosthesis built thery informed me that the suction was
the way to go but if the suction would not work for me then they would use a
pin / lock system.
