From: A R Pickett on 5 Oct 2008 13:53 Another longish report from the newbie My husband and I had booked a four day fall cruise down the Pacific Coast, and when his health went south, I figured we would have to cancel. But he urged me to go alone, and so I did. My first trip since diagnosis (T2) and of course, the trip would involve exposure to all the fabled culinary excesses of cruise atmosphere. But I bought a new pair of slacks to wear at dinner (2 sizes smaller than previous purchases) took my meter, and intended to relax and enjoy myself. And I did, and with only one weird spike I couldn't peg to any one indulgence, I kept my daytime readings consistently at 140 or below, and am readings at 100 or less. The spike came after I asked for some "sugar free butterscotch pudding." Well, it didn't taste very good in the first place, and I didn't finish the portion served me, but spiked nevertheless. One thing on my side - most of the servings of one's original order in a cruise dining room are on the small side of modest. And most menus include "light suggestions" or an alternative to order broiled fish or chicken breast, and a green salad option as well. So by sticking to the lighter choices, not asking for seconds, judiciously choosing smallish servings of whole grain breads, and sticking to one daily glass of wine instead of the carb heavy fancy drinks, I felt indulged and pampered, with the extra reward of good readings from my meter. Throw in a couple of swedish massages, several one mile walks on the deck in the open air, and the one and only call to room service for a treat of sliced cheese and rye krisp crackers - it was a marvelous four days. And my home bathroom scale tells me I might have lost another pound or two. -- A R Pickett aka Woodstock T2 - 1500 mg metformin 10 mg glyberide "Sometimes the facts threaten the truth" Amos Oz, prize winning Israeli author Read my book reviews at: http://www.booksnbytes.com/reviews/_idx_ws_all_byauth.html Now blogging! http://www.journalscape.com/woodstock/ Remove lower case "e" to respond
From: Michelle C on 5 Oct 2008 14:28 Excellent news Woodstock! I'm glad you got to have such a wonderful time--and manage your BG to boot. The fact that you lost additional pounds under those conditions is absolutely fantastic. You're really getting the hang of this! As for the sugar free butterscotch pudding, I don't know for sure, but in my experience sugar free puddings often have maltodextrin in them. Maltodextrin spikes me, and I believe Dr. Bernstein said that it breaks down into sugar eventually. (It's been awhile since I read about maltodextrin, so may not have it exactly right.) I've even found maltodextrin in some sugar free jellos. I was really puzzled because I'd been fine with sugar free jello, then bought a different brand and had a spike. Sure enough, the new brand had maltodextrin. (I usually use the cheapy Great Value brand, but it didn't have a particular flavor that I needed and bought Jello brand--it had the maltodextrin (at least in the flavor I bought). I'm sure sorry to hear about your husband and the fact that he couldn't go with you on the cruise. I hope that he is feeling better now. -- Best regards, Michelle C., T2 diet & exercise BMI 21.5

Woodstock, it sounds as though you had a wonderful vacation. I love cruising. I also like that you have the opportunity to make the right choices and stay on whatever program works for you. I am glad you had a relaxing time of it all Loretta |
