hi, i have seen some old posts regarding barrier rings. i am wondering
whether
these (hollister, or eakin, or coloplast, etc.) would be helpful with
appliances
for someone (me) who has a colostomy. can you place a one piece pouch
over the barrier ring? or is the ring to thick? would it eliminate the
need for
paste around the pouch opening (or around the stoma)? i was having
diarrhea and
the paste was not doing the trick. loose, fluid stool was seeping
under the pouch
and irritating skin. paste was not preventing the fluid from going
under the pouch.
any suggestions or personal experiences would be helpful. --ralph p.

Ralph -- I have successfully used Eakin Seals for almost 20 years under
appliances of differing types. It has ALWAYS made life more comfortable
for me and made my appliances more manageable. The seals can be cut,
shaped and molded into whatever you need to seal your stoma. I also
find that the Eakin Seals provide a certain level of added healing
properties that help prevent skin breakdown. Hope this helps.

The Hollister 7805 ring can be hand molded to be thinner, wider or oblong
much like modeling clay. Only stickier. These do erode but they take a
while. They hold up to "soft server" for a long time but not much over a
day with watery stool if I'm active. Some foods seem to cause more
erosion then others. Cabbage wipes out my appliance so I only eat it when
it's time to change. :-)

Ditto to what Dino Wrote, the Eakin Seal is a miracle of modern technology,
allowing me to wear my appliance much longer than otherwise. And It seals
for the duration of your wear time. Just warm it up for about 30 seconds by
pressing it tight to your periphery and off you go...
