Hello,

I have suffered from really bad anxiety and depression lately, so bad
that I am scared to leave my home. I used to go out and do things all
the time. Now, I spend most of my time either at home or work. I am
not sure what to do. I am on Effexor and Seroquel.

Hi Chris,
It might be time for a meds change, either a change in dosage of the current
meds or different meds. Have you talked to your doctor about it, or to your
therapist? I have taken a lot of different ADs over the years -- sometimes
they just don't work as well as they used to, and a change is necessary. I'd
say first thing talk to your doctor.
And right away, talk to your therapist to figure out what exactly you're
afraid of out there.
Please keep us posted on how you're doing. Don't give up, Chris. Sending you
lots of support vibes.
Deirdre

Welcome Chris!

I agree with Deirdre's response. Some times the meds poop out. Please take
care.

Dear Chris,

Welcome to ASAPM! I`m really sorry for what you`re going through. I`m sure
many people, myself included, will relate to your current struggles. What you
describe sounds like agoraphobia but only a professional could tell you for
sure. I`m agoraphobic, twice I was so bad that I was housebound. I can tell
you that you will not get better hiding in your home. I suggest you
re-evaluate your meds with your doctor. Obviously, they aren`t working that
well. Why are you taking seroquel? It`s usually not that effective for
anxiety. There are better choices, such as benzodiazepines.
The thing that helped me the most in getting past my front door was cognitive
behavioral therapy. I slowly desensitized myself to the outside world with the
help of a professional who practiced cognitive behavioral therapy. I strongly
encourage you to look into CBT. It has helped many! :)
One of the best things I did for myself when agoraphobic was to find a local
support group. I`m sure if you looked you would find support groups by you.
Good places to look are hospitals and libraries. Support groups are great for
making you feel less alone.

Here are some informative links on cognitive behavioral therapy...

Here is a very informative site on anxiety and panic disorder.

On agoraphobia

Here you will find all sorts of self-help techniques like deep breathing and
muscle relaxation exercises that can help decrease your anxiety and panic.

You might want to check out the following books from your library:

"A Guide to Rational Living", by Albert Ellis, Ph.D
"Feeling Good, The New Mood Therapy", by David D. Burns, M.D.
"How to Control Your Anxiety, Before it Conrols You", by Albert Ellis, Ph.D
"The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook", by Edmund J., Ph.D. Bourne

All this week I will be posting lots of info ranging from self-help, to
finding local support groups.... to anxiety-reducing techniques. Keep an eye
out for them, they could help. Don`t hesitate to ask any questions you may
have, we`ll do our best to help you. It will get better :).

Hi Chris,

I also want to welcome you to ASAPM. I have "days" that I feel I
cannot go outside. Other days, I get in my car and drive around just
to get OUT of the house... it just depends on my mood that day. A med
change might help a lot, like everyone else has suggested, and if
you're not in therapy, CBT is really a big help.

Wishing you luck,

Sally
