From: Musashi on 26 Oct 2005 09:10 I was on Remicade for about 6 months and all was going well. I wasn't finding any side-effect or anything. Only that my immune system was right down, and I had to be very careful not to keep catching colds and bugs etc. Anyway, my last infusion (June this year) ended me up in hospital. The next day I got a blockage from scar tissue. Remicade is known to sometime cause this, as it makes the healing process happen to quick, it leave scar tissue behind. Luckily, the blockage managed to open up with steroids and antibiotics and not eating for about 5 days. I can't ever go back on Remicade because of this reaction. Wouldn't want it to happen again. I was warned by my physician about this possibility before I started on the infusions. And it had to happen to me lol! My physician doesn't understand why everything that could go wrong, happens to me. But that's besides the point. From: jitow on 26 Oct 2005 10:22 You got a blockage from scar tissue related to Remicade infusions? I wonder if this happened to me as it wasnt long after the infusions that I had to have more surgery. Does the info say anything about this? Lots to consider here. Thanks :)
From: Musashi on 26 Oct 2005 13:12 Yeah I did. It was one or two days after my last infusion. I was warned by my specialist before starting on Remicade that this is a complication that could happen with Remicade. How I heard it was that it heals so fast that it makes scar tissue and that scar tissue builds up to case a blockage. I don't know if this info can be found anywhere, I'm just going by what I was told by the specialist and what actually happened. From: Mickey on 26 Oct 2005 14:18 Okay I have decided to hold off on the infusions until I am sicker (hopefully never!) I just spoke with my dr. and he is okay with this considering that I am pretty healthy right now and really anxious about it. We are going to up the Imuran a little for now. Thanks for all your help, Mickey

Hi Mickey, When I was having fistulas, my GI used Remicade frequently with me with a great deal of success in treating those fistulas. I was fortunate to not have any allergic reactions. No one really knows about long term side effects as the drug is too new, it was only approved for use in the Fall of '98. The reason we stopped using Remicade was the GI raised my 6MP dosage and my fistulizing CD is mostly in remission. It it weren't, I'm sure we would still be using it. The one thing I would advise is to insist that you receive your infusion in a hospital setting and not an infusion center or by home health care. I say this because allergic reactions are still unpredictable and a hospital is the safest setting should you suddenly develop complications, and they usually happen pretty quickly. Good luck! :) mgbio Mike G wrote: > I have had Crohn's for 20 years and my Dr. has been trying to get me on > Remicade for the last 5 years but I got pregnant twice and so he never > was able to do it.
