From: ibegforu on 12 Jan 2006 19:29 Well I'm looking for some advice from people who've had experience with the drug Remeron. After 2 weeks of putting off getting the prescription filled I'm finally ready to give it a go. I have 11, 30mg tablets of the generic version. Brand name Mirtazapine. So I mainly wanted to get this prescription because I have severe issues with insomnia. Most likely related to anxiety with a moderate depression lurking in the shadows. I'm posting since my anxiety me very sensitive to medications. But I really need some sleep so the sensitivity will have to wait. Also I live alone in my mid 20's and I am always concerned I will have some freak allergic reaction. I also think I'm going to fall into asleep I won't wake up from. Am I being paranoid? I think I know the answer to this question but would still love to hear it from someone else. So I plan on giving it a try tonight. I will break a 30 into 2, 15's and take 15mg before bed. So here are some questions I would love answered by people who have tried Remeron or it's generic equivalent. A sort of answers to FAQ if you will. In advance I would like to thank everyone who responds to my bizarre and borderline ridiculous questions. Here goes. 1. How long before bed should I take my 15mg dose? 2. What type of feelings can I expect that are normal while on Remeron? 3. For that matter what type of feelings has anyone experienced that are not normal while on Remeron? 4. Anyone taken the generic version? Any difference? 5. I no Remeron has a long half-life. So what type of feelings should I expect the next day? 6. Say I take my Remeron and I lie awake tossing and turning all night. Should I even bother going outside the next day? I say that because I feel weird enough as it is going outside not having slept for 24 hours. But this time I might feel all drugged up. 7. On my pill bottle it says *PMS-Mirtazapine. Does anyone know what the *PMS stands for? 8. Is 15mg a good starting dose? Or should I break it down again to7.5mg? 9. Any precautions I should take while on this drug? Such as drug or food interactions. 10. Since it has such a long half-life do I need to take it 2 nights in a row? Or do I go one night on one night off. I say this because I got a 3 week 15mg prescription filled. But I only got 11, 30mg tabs. Seems like that would be only a 2-week supply at the most. Well I hope it works out. I've heard a lot of good stories of people having initial success with it for sleeping. I haven't taken any pharmaceuticals for a while. So that's why I'm so nervous. I've been trying to win the chronic insomnia battle on my own but have had little success. The only thing that helps is working the 3rd and 2nd shift. But I still need something to get me to bed for the hiring & training process. Which is usually a 9-to5 ordeal. These are just scary, negative thoughts. They are not based in reality, just your fears. It`s important to challenge these thoughts. ::Am I being paranoid? Not at all. You sound like an anxious person that is scared to take a medication for the first time. I was the same way when I took paxil. :: In advance I would like to ::thank everyone who responds to my bizarre and borderline ridiculous ::questions. Here goes. Your questions are neither bizarre or ridiculous. We can`t learn if we don`t ask :) ::1. How long before bed should I take my 15mg dose? Taken from RXlist.com ~*~The recommended starting dose for REMERON? (mirtazapine) Tablets is 15 mg/day, administered in a single dose, preferably in the evening prior to sleep.~*~ http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/mirtaz_ids.htm There is nothing wrong in experimenting with the time you take it in the PM. If this were "me", I would take it 1 hour before bed. You could also ask you doctor or pharmacist for advice about this. I would want to feel sleepy by the time I got into bed. ::2. What type of feelings can I expect that are normal while on Remeron? Side-effect wise, lets just say it can range from feeling tired, to some GI upset, to a temporary increase in anxiety. Best not to focus on possible side-effects when you are feeling anxious already. Remember, someone elses negative experience is just that, "theirs", not guaranteed to be yours. ::3. For that matter what type of feelings has anyone experienced that ::are not normal while on Remeron? Best not to ask :) The more negative you hear, the more anxious you will feel when there is no guarantee that you will even experience those side-effects. The worse thing I did before taking paxil was to research all the negative on it. Nearly scared me from taking it. ::4. Anyone taken the generic version? Any difference? There should be no difference. I was on brand paxil for a few years. My insurance made me switch to the generic version in 2003, I felt no difference. ::5. I no Remeron has a long half-life. So what type of feelings should ::I expect the next day? It is possible that you will experience some side-effects. Which ones, I don`t know. It`s also possible you will feel nothing until the 2rd or 3rd day. More than likely you will not experience any "positive" effects the first day. Just remember that it could take a few weeks before this happens. ::6. Say I take my Remeron and I lie awake tossing and turning all night. :: Should I even bother going outside the next day? I say that because I ::feel weird enough as it is going outside not having slept for 24 hours. :: But this time I might feel all drugged up. You may want to be careful about driving or operating any heavy machinery if you feel groggy or out of it. I don`t think it would hurt to go outside for a walk to get some fresh air. It would probably be good for you :) ::7. On my pill bottle it says *PMS-Mirtazapine. Does anyone know what ::the *PMS stands for? >From what I read, it has something to do with Canadas "interchangable" formulary listing. ::8. Is 15mg a good starting dose? Or should I break it down again ::to7.5mg? If you tend to be senstive to medication, then starting at 7.5mgs is a good idea. Make sure you doctor is made aware of this. ::9. Any precautions I should take while on this drug? Such as drug or ::food interactions. ? Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Remeron may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness, avoid these activities. ? Dizziness is likely to occur when you rise from a sitting or lying position. Rise slowly to prevent dizziness and a possible fall. ? Avoid the use of alcohol while taking Remeron. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness. http://www.drugs.com/remeron.html ::10. Since it has such a long half-life do I need to take it 2 nights in ::a row? Or do I go one night on one night off. I say this because I ::got a 3 week 15mg prescription filled. But I only got 11, 30mg tabs. ::Seems like that would be only a 2-week supply at the most. Remeron is a med that needs to be taken "everyday". You need to call your doctor and/or pharmacist for clarification on why there is only 11 pills. It is possible that the pharmacy shorted you some pills. ::Well I hope it works out. I've heard a lot of good stories of people ::having initial success with it for sleeping. I haven't taken any ::pharmaceuticals for a while. So that's why I'm so nervous. I've ::been trying to win the chronic insomnia battle on my own but have had ::little success. The only thing that helps is working the 3rd and 2nd ::shift. But I still need something to get me to bed for the hiring & ::training process. Which is usually a 9-to5 ordeal. Thanks again Wishing you much luck with the remeron. Please keep up updated!! I also heard that tapering off Remeron is not as big a deal as tapering off SSRIs. Gosh, we are so phobic! My coworker started taking Prozac just because he had fatigue. No depression, no anxiety, just fatigue. All I do is read the horror stories on the Net about Prozac turning people into killers and monsters! People with anxiety disorders just worry too much. : ) -- ========== Please DELETE this text block when replying! ========== Contact the moderators at: asapm-board(a)stump.algebra.com The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm ========= This notice is added to each approved article ==========

Phobic we are :) When my psychologist recommended I go on prozac, I refused. The horror stories I had read about it were enough to scare me from even considering giving it a try. I asked to go on paxil being two friends of mine were doing so well on it. I`m very happy with the results, been on it since 98. I only wish I knew then.... what I know now, about how hard it is to wean off paxil. Over the years I`ve lowered my dose from 20 mgs to 10 mgs with no real problems as long as I decreased my dose in 2.5 mgs. I`ve tried a few times to wean off 10 mgs and it is very uncomfortable. By the way, welcome to ASAPM :) Jackie ~*~Life was so much easier when your clothes didn't match and boys had cooties!~*~ ~~ Unknown -- ========== Please DELETE this text block when replying! ========== Contact the moderators at: asapm-board(a)stump.algebra.com The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm ========= This notice is added to each approved article ==========

I'd try amitriptyline first. It is often said (by me, among others ;-) that benzos are not fiorst choice meds for insomnia because we tend to develop tolerance to their sedative effect (unlike their *anxiolytic* effect) so they should only be used very short-term do be effective without developing dependence. On another note there is quite some anecdotal information out there from people who sleep very well on temazepam or nitrazepam without problems. My late mother used to sleep quite well on nitrzepam for more than twenty years... YMMV and the proof is in the pudding.
