From: seekeagle@aol.com on 11 Jun 2006 13:18 Hi- My "Integrative Medicine" Physician has me taking Red Yeast Rice Extract (made by NuMedica) to lower cholesterol. She says the only Red Yeast Rice Extract available in the United States that is effective (i.e. contains lovastatin) is available only through prescription. This is an expensive situation. My questions are: 1) I presume all the Red Yeast Rice Extracts available from the usual vitamin mills are pseudo, yes? 2) any sources of Red Yeast Rice Extract w/ lovastatin that don't have the price tag that NuMedica / my physician charges ($36,00 for 90 833 mg capsules)? Thanks!

No. The whole advantage is that they are natural and thus not as dangerous as Chemicals substitute. Lovastatin is the dangerous stuff. > > 2) any sources of Red Yeast Rice Extract w/ lovastatin that don't > have the price tag that NuMedica / my physician charges ($36,00 for 90 > 833 mg capsules)? Lovastatin is the FAKE stuff and the DANGEROUS stuff. Lovastatin is not part of red yeast rice. > > Thanks! >
From: seekeagle@aol.com on 11 Jun 2006 22:10 Vernon, The NuMedica Red Yeast Rice Extract I am taking is provided by a physician (NuMedica does not sell to the public/ only health care professionals, I guess....), so I feel comfortable with it/ do not believe I am at risk. But she said the "real stuff" is only available by prescription. So I am assuming all the Red Yeast on the market at GMC or wherever has different "active" ingredients. I read about Cholestin and lovastatin on Andrew Weil's website (he expressed concern that all the non-lovastatin/ pseudo- red yeast extracts on the market were worthless for reducing cholesterol... Anybody else has good insight? Thanks!

A typical vernon reply -- opinionated and wrong. From http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/red-yeast-rice/NS_patient-redyeast Red yeast rice (RYR) is the product of yeast (Monascus purpureus) grown on rice, and is served as a dietary staple in some Asian countries. It contains several compounds collectively known as Monacolins, substances known to inhibit cholesterol synthesis. One of these, "Monacolin K" is a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, and is also known as Mevinolin or Lovastatin (MevacorĀ®, a drug produced by Merck & Co., Inc). -- David Wright :: alphabeta at prodigy.net These are my opinions only, but they're almost always correct. Thanks! > Re; statin from Red Yeast rice, she is a liar or ignorant. ALL non-natural statins i.e. lovastatins are "dangerous", thus prescription. About the only difference in Red Yeast rice is the recommended dose which should be about 1200 mg per day. |
