The Slaughter of an Exhausted Whale Calf

06/01/2006

After refueling inside the Antarctic Treaty area, the
Japanese whaling fleet has recommenced the whale
hunt and slaughter after 11 days. In that time the fleet
has fled over 3,000 nautical miles from the far east
of the whaling area to the far west. Greenpeace activists
again disrupted the whale hunt on 5 January, enabling
many whales to escape. Andrew, from the Greenpeace
ship, Esperanza, tells the story of one hunt and how
the harpoonist needed only one good shot to

The research by the Japanese whaling fleet has been
widely discredited, with scientific whaling being used
to cover the commercial slaughter of whales for
consumption on the Japanese restaurant market.
Japan has increased its quota of whales to be
slaughtered this year to 935 minke and 10 of the
endangered fin whale.

60 scientists from 12 nations, including Japan, are
taking part in a $7 million Australian-led research
voyage to study whales, ocean salinity, temperature
and depth as pointers to climate change and
determining the health of krill populations in the
areas visited.

This slaughter is not for scientific research; it is
for commercial purposes! It is immoral, illegal,
and undeniably cruel...and must be exposed to
the world and shut down.

Write to Australia's Environment Minister,
Ian Campbell email: senator.ian.campbell @ aph.gov.au .
He could stop the slaughter if not for the fact that he is
busy pandering to Tokyo.

Write to Japan's Prime Minister, and tell him that the
world is watching as Japanese poachers slaughter
whales illegally:

Hello David. Consider the following:

'The Japanese whaling operation is in violation of many international
laws and regulations, including:
* Violating the Southern Ocean Sanctuary.
* They are violating the http://www.iwcoffice.org/ International
Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling.
* They are targeting endangered fin and humpback whales that are
protected under the http://www.cites.org/index.html Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
(CITES).
* The Japanese are also in violation of the Australian laws
protecting the Australian Antarctic Territorial waters.
* They are violating the IWC moratorium on the use of factory ships
to process any protected stock which includes the whales they are
hunting - minke and fin whales.

Said territory nobody on earth recognizes, although I do agree whaling
should be banned.

What is wrong with the Republicans?

With Republican George Bush as President we no longer have a leader seeking
to positively inspire Americans to greatness, we have a President for the
first time seeking to govern by the manipulation of our basest and most
irrational fears.

Not even the Australian government, apparently.
