From: gamstang on 7 Jan 2006 19:11 I've found that my vision has deteriorated in the past year, is this related to hypothyroidism? I'm short sighted, and had new lenses not so long ago, but my vision is blurred and weak with them. My night vision is very poor too. Is there anything I can do? Thankyou.

If you've had the RAIU test done, check this out: http://www.ithyroid.com/get_the_raiu_test.htm It says that the test itself can cause problems. Here's some info about thyroid eye disease on the same site: http://www.ithyroid.com/thyroid_eye_disease.htm Perhaps others here have more info. Richard

Thankyou. | have you been check for Diabetes? blurry vision is a very common "first" sign. ask your doctor for a fast glucose test and if that comes back within lab range, then ask for a oral glucose tolerance test, if that comes back within range, then it's not diabetes.. but at the risk of all the complications it brings on, you're better off to get checked then to ignore it. Good Luck. btw, my daughter (18yrs) has Hashi's, I'm a Type 1 diabetic. RK

If you haven't been seen by an ophthalmologist (not optician), it would be good to do so, even if it turns out that the vision issues are unrelated. Thyroid Eye Disease is most often related to Grave (hyperthyroidism) but can be seen with hypo or normal thyroid function. Dry eyes are part of it, often, and can lead to blurring of vision so try some preservative free articial tears. Use them more often than you would think necessary, you can't overdo them. Do you have any feeling of grittiness? The links from Richard have some good studies included, but include a lot of musings that are a bit worriesome. Mag |
