Hi there,

A friend of mine is suffering from depression.

He says he is dead, what can I do/say to help him?
He wants to be alone when like this, but now and then he contacts me,
and says "I'm dead" or "I'm lost"....I feel like I'm failing him.
I've sent him empowering passages, and reinforced not to let people
worry him.

I think he misses a family member he can no longer have contact with,
this is what hurts him most. He reaches out to me, I try, but I need
help.

Please help.

Thank you,
Faith

What you can do is let him know that help is available, and something about
the kinds of help. You can't make him seek help, but you can let him know
that you care about him, and want him to get help so he will feel better.

Fom your description, I think his problems are well beyond anything you or
he can resolve alone. My recommendation is that he see a psychiatrist to be
evaluated for antidepressant medication. It does exist, and it does work. He
may need a therapist (psychologist) to learn how to deal with some issues in
his life as well.

I would like to suggest you visit my Web site, and download my book on
medication. At least skim the sections on depression, and then discuss the
options with your friend.

I hope this helps.
