From: Lee Michaels on 19 Feb 2006 11:41 David, I know you are one who loves to plug your adopted city of sin. Something about taxes and strippers. But I have another feature of you fine city to promote. Your locat SWAT team. I saw a special on one of the many discovery channels yesterday. It featured the Las Vegas SWAT team. Apparently after the Columbine disaster, many SWAT teams started to review responses to such situations. They are termed "active shooter". This is a guy who wants to kill as many people as possible and himself as well. Traditional, by the book, approaches will not work. These guys need to be stopped as quickly as possibe. And in a large facility such as a high school, regular SWAT teams are too few in number to search out the shooters. So what the Las Vegas SWAT folks did was to train the entire police department in emergency SWAT procedures. They took everybody who could carry a gun from admistrative personel. patrol officers, desk jockies, etc. If you have a badge and gun, you were trained. They use a simplified approach. But they can search a large building in three person teams very efficiently. They not only worked out tactics, training, etc., but they were the first in the country to do this. Most cities have not done this. But Las VEgas SWAT not only trained everybody, but have had some large scale exercises in this. These exercises included searching, engaging the gunman and evacuating casulties. It is horrible to think that his sort of thing may occur. But is is also good that there are good, hard working people preparing for such an event. You are to be congratulated for having such a fine police force and SWAT team. Maybe this Las Vegas thing isn't so bad after all.

Thank you. Unlike certain Left Coast and Other Left Coast cities, we in Las Vegas (except for the criminal element and the NAACP) actually like our police officers. We give them the benefit of the doubt, always. If you get shot by the police, you deserved it. I do not recall any police shooting in my nearly 30 years here being ruled unjustifiable. Want to sue the police because they treated you badly? Go ahead. Good luck with that. As a result, Suicide by Cop is quite effective. There is no hesitation, worrying about being sued, or disciplined. Pull a gun, or a knife, on a Las Vegas area police officer, and you die. And a whole bunch of legally armed citizens might join in, just for effect. We like it that way. David

I think it's around the 3rd weekend of the December. Will post more details when it gets closer. I will very likely be there. I'm going to try to do two PL meets this year and this will be one of them.

From the email I got about the meet: > The World Bench, Deadlift and Pushpull in Dec is moving to Las Vegas > Dec 16-17 ... > We have great Sun-Thursday rates of $31/night and weekend at $62/night That's the hotel rate - no info about the entry fee yet, and no application form yet but we're supposed to get it soon. My impression of gambling establishments in general is that they'll let you stay for free if you can give them a good enough reason because they want you there to gamble. -S- http://www.kbnj.com |
