From: goldbanjo on 2 Sep 2008 21:21 About an hour ago I was walking outside and out of the blue, tooth #8 got a sharp, piercing type of pain. I felt a similar pain last week in tooth #10 but not quite as bad. I do get these pains over the years but tonight it hurts more than usual and not steady, just zings. When I press my right sinus area next to my nose, it hurts a little. Tooth #8 has never been filled and I had my teeth cleaned last month. No cavities were seen but no x-rays were taken, I took 2 Advils an hour ago but still feel intermittent sharp pangs. I am wondering if sinuses can refer pain to tooth #8 and if this sounds like it could be from that. Tooth #7 is root canaled but the periapical area is not tender and it doesn't hurt to tap. It really feels like #8. A few hours ago, I felt some discomfort on the whole upper right area so could it be sinuses going all the way to 8 and does it ever show as this sharp, intermittent jab type of pain? I tried using saline solution in my nose and am just waiting to see what this is. Thanks.

The maxillary sinuses do not generally extend this far forward. Try tapping your finger on each tooth--this may help to localize things. Otherwise, you should have your dentist look and take an x-ray. Steve
From: goldbanjo on 3 Sep 2008 20:20 Thanks, Steve. The pain was about an inch below my eye on the side of my nose. It went away after 2 hours. I have had so many odd pains for the past 15 years, diagnosed with atypical odontalgia 10 years ago in another area following an extraction which subsided over the years. I get burning, lancing pain but it isn't trigeminal neuralgia (I've seen 2 neurologists). It's not like a regular toothache and it leaves as fast as it comes but seems to be sinus related or some crazy neurological quirk. I did have pain in back teeth yesterday also so it could just be running along the nerve to the front. If it comes back, I will surely have an x-ray. Many thanks as always, goldbanjo :-)
