From: Rosemary on 1 Feb 2007 23:54 Just wondering, has anybody out there got any experiences of taking phenelzine or some other MAOI and dealing with the dietary restrictions, side-effects, etc? I've had a chat with my mum about her experiences with it as a teenager, but I'd be really interested to see how it's affected other people, too. Thanks, Rosemary

Personally, no, but I knew someone who took reboxetine (reversible MAOI, so not as bad regarding dietry restrictions). The side effects were evil - crabby and irritable all the time, things like that. If you take an MAOI, pay attention to the physical signs your body is displaying. If you're running into trouble with (umm... is this right?) tyramnine overload, you'll notice weirdness before it gets bad. Do not ask where I got this data. I shall not say. And it won't apply to everyone. Rowland. -- Remove the animal for email address: rowland.mcdonnell(a)dog.physics.org Sorry - the spam got to me http://www.mag-uk.org http://www.bmf.co.uk UK biker? I don't know why the doctor wants me to go on phenelzine which like you say is an irreversible MAOI and worse on the dietary front, but I've read one or two things saying that it's the first-line MAOI of choice, for some reason. I think with food the main concern is tyramine, but also dopamine, from broad-bean pods and stuff. There are whole truckloads of other medications I'll have to avoid too, like decongestants, various cold and cough remedies, antihistamines etc. I just really want to hear from real people what it's been like for them, as well as reading the information leaflets and those sorts of things - and I'm a bit loath to just go onto some discussion board devoted to the stuff and read experiences of people who I've never come across before in my life. :-) Rosemary

That's why I threw in the small about of faintly relevant information I had. > as well as reading the information leaflets and those sorts of things - > and I'm a bit loath to just go onto some discussion board devoted to the > stuff and read experiences of people who I've never come across before in > my life. :-) Well, MAOIs aren't often prescribed these days. I can't think of any reason for prescribing one aside from cheapness. There are a lot of other drug combinations that can be used when the usual treatments have failed - MAOIs are a *very* blunt stick in the way they work, but they're easy to make and out of patent and therefore dirt cheap. If I were you, I'd ask your quack why he's prescribing the drug. If it's `lack of response to the usual drugs' - how about looking into something like L-tryptophan as an adjunct to `whatever else' (it's all in the BNF). I wouldn't take an MAOI myself. But then again, you know my opinions on psychotropic drugs...
