Since 2003, I've had horrible palpations and chest pain. My heart
would race around 150bpm after coming home from school for no apparent
reason. After my first panic attack, I was told that anxiety can cause
the heart to race ect.. To date, I've seen many cardiologists.. They
haven't been able to find anything other than my heart is on the
bigger side of normal (I'm a big guy).

How many of you have palpations? Can they be this extreme? When someone
knocks at my front door, my pulse can shoot up to 180bpm. In the ER,
it's been 200bpm.

I just feel lost and alone... My poor heart is always racing.

Thanks.

Dear Q-wave,

A racing heart use to be a big anxiety/panic symptom for me. I still get it,
but not as often. Now I have a lot of problems with skipped heart beats.
Tachycardia and PVC`s sent me running to the ER about two years ago. I
understand how scary cardiac symptoms can be. Yes, anxiety can make your heart
race really, really fast. Are you still having severe cardiac symptoms on
atenolol? How much atenolol are you taking? I also take a beta blocker, it is
called "toprol". It does make a big difference in lowering my heart rate. If
my heart rate is a bit high, I don`t feel it, thanks to the toprol. If the
atenolol isn`t making a big difference, you may want to ask your cardiologist
to either increase the dose, or try a different beta blocker. Also, was your
thyroid tested? Overactive thyroid can cause your heart rate to be that high.
Limit or eliminate caffeine from your diet (caffeine can trigger cardiac
symptoms), OTC decongestants can cause a rapid heart beat as well. Just
thought I would mention that being it is cold and flu season :)

I lurk at the following Yahoo site. It is a support group for people with
PVC`s, but there are many posters there with all kinds of heart arrhythmias.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/PeoplewithPVCs/

You aren`t lost and alone anymore, you found us :)

Thanks for the support Jackie,

I've had so many blood tests, EKG's, cardiac catherazation.. you name
it! They really haven't found anything going on with my heart other
than the palpations and mild enlargment due to the fact I'm a big guy.
I even flew to the Cleveland Clinic (best heart hospital in the US),
and they said I was ok.

I take Atenolol, 50-75mg daily. It seems to work very well for me but
dosen't do much during an attack. My heart also pounds after I eat for
some reason. I just started seeing a new cardiologist and I plan to
meet with him about every 4 months.

Take care,

Q-Wave

Hi Q-Wave. I used to get this all the time. It was my worst panic symptom.
I take 80mg propanolol LA each day and it is fine now. Also I did CBT
therapy which helps a lot with this type of thing. You have to let go of your
fears and not worry about the racing pulse if you want to master it. Fear is
what makes it race in the first place!

Good luck to you!
