PIP Wish List

Members of the CAP Surgical Pathology Committee are asking for your
assistance in providing material for future mailings of the Performance
Improvement Program in Surgical Pathology (PIP).

The following list includes some of the specimens that are desirable, but
all surgical pathology diagnoses are considered for inclusion in PIP. The
CAP will gratefully accept any well-fixed prion disease-free paraffin
embedded diagnostic material. Tissue submitted in formalin (wet tissue)
will not be accepted. Approximately 35 paraffin blocks are required to
provide the glass slides for a single case. The CAP will accept blocks
with multiple pieces of tissue if it is more convenient. The CAP cannot
accept wet tissue donations for the PIP program.

Skin
Lesions of any sort.

Soft Tissue/Bone/Joint
Reaction to previous arthroplasty; sarcomas of soft tissue or bone of any
type; benign tumors of soft tissue and bone; chronic osteomyelitis; gout
and pseudogout; Paget disease; renal osteodystrophy, osteopenia (vanishing
bone disease); nodular fasciitis.

CNS
Radiation necrosis; degenerative diseases; any CNS tumor; angiitis;
infectious disease.

Hematopoietic/Lymphatic
Nodal and extranodal lymphomas; lymphadenitis; lymphadenopathies;
non-follicular center cell low grade lymphoma; extramedullary myeloid
tumor; any primary splenic disorder; spindle cell and vascular lesions of
lymph nodes.

Head/Neck
Salivary gland neoplasm of any type; any neoplasm other than ordinary
squamous carcinoma; odontogenic lesions; maxillofacial and sinonasal
lesions; any thyroid neoplasm; parathyroid carcinoma.

Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Disease
Barrett esophagus; malignant polyp of colon; inflammatory bowel disease of
any kind at any site; adenocarcinoma of gallbladder; hepatitides that are
not end stage including sclerosing cholangitis, steatohepatitis of liver;
liver biopsies. Non-cirrhotic liver hemochromatosis; antitrypsin disease;
Wilson disease; mucinous tumors of the appendix; familial polyposis;
inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors; lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma.

Breast
Proliferative breast diseases; carcinomas other than ordinary invasive
ductal carcinoma, especially tubular carcinoma, medullary carcinoma; and
lobular carcinoma variants; micropapillary DCIS, vascular lesions; radial
scar; inflammatory breast lesions.

GU
Malignant renal disease of any kind; transitional cell carcinoma (in-situ
or invasive) of urinary bladder or kidney; prostate-treatment effect;
transitional cell carcinoma involving the prostate gland; PIN; basal cell
hyperplasia of the prostate; variants of adenocarcinoma of prostate;
non-end stage medical disease of kidney; variants of renal cell carcinoma
other than ordinary clear cell type; multilobulated cystic nephroma;
teratoma; interstitial cystitis; nephrogenic adenoma; any lesion of the
testis, epididymis or spermatic cord; any lesion of the penis.

Gyn
Malignant melanoma of vagina; adenocarcinoma of fallopian tube; dysplasia
of cervix; endometriosis of any site; hyperplasia of endometrium; ovarian
stromal tumors; immature teratoma of ovary; adenocarcinoma of endocervix;
any placental or gestational trophoblastic disease excluding routine
chorioamnionitis.

Pediatric
Pediatric neoplasms and pseudo tumors of any type; congenital nephrosis.

Cardiopulmonary
Any interstitial lung disease; low-grade mucinous tumors; hamartomas of
lung; non-carcinoid bronchial gland tumors; mucoid impaction of bronchi;
pulmonary vasculitis; aortic aneurysm.

How to Donate Material

To donate material, please submit paraffin blocks, together with the
referenced surgical report (minus the patient�s name) and any additional
ancillary materials to:
