Hi, just wondering if anyone in the group has ever asked for been
given a PCR spiinal fluid test to check for herpes dna in their spinal
fluid. If so, if the test was positive did they declare you have
hereps simplex encephalitis? I score 38.40 on IgG antibodies for
herpes simplex type I and have been refused the spianl fluid test. I
have many of the symptoms of encephalitis..I have tremors, ringing in
the head..buzzing in the head..I had spasmodic torticollis at age 27.
I'mpartially deaf, my ear canals ar stenosed. No one has ever even
suggested that my aliments could be caused by a hepres infection.

Nope, and I've never heard of that before either.

Is that what your doctor told you that you have?

So basically you were told that you have HSV-1? Did they tell you what your
status was for HSV-2? Did they give you any reasons to believe that you
might have that other condition that you mentioned?

Just because you are experiencing certain symptoms doesn't mean you can know
for sure what those symptoms are related to without having a doctor helping
you to figure this out. What did YOUR doctor say about your symptoms?

Have your doctors ever told you why they believe that you are having all
these problems?
How long have you had these issues? What did your doctors tell you?

It won't just pick up encephalitis, it also spots acute and recurrent
meningitis etc etc, so they won;t name a condition solely on HSV DNA in
CSF.

Ah, now there is this paper thats fairly recent;
Afonso N, Gunasena S, Galla K, Podzorski R, Chandrasekar P, Alangaden G.
Appropriate use of polymerase chain reaction for detection of herpes
simplex virus 2 in cerebrospinal fluid of patients at an inner-city
hospital.
Diagn Microbiol Infect Dis. 2006 Dec 14; [Epub ahead of print]

One of the comments that they make is 'In conclusion, HSV-1 was rarely
detected in CSF of patients with suspected CNS infection.' Spinal taps
carry risks and it may be that the clinical unit you are dealing with
agrees with the authors of the paper above, and so have decided that for
HSV1 the CSF test is too dangerous to carry out when targetting HSV1 as it
simply doesnt give enough hits, or is the wrong place to go looking.

OK guesswork on my part but it is educated guesswork...

I scored negeative on herpes type 2 antibodies. The many many doctors
I have seen for many years have never mentioned the possiblity that
herpes could be cauing my afflictions. I retired on disabilty at age
38, Im 53 now. I developed spasmodic torticollis at age 27. here is
link about the herpes conection:

I can not get a spinal fluid PCR done and I have high cranial pressure
in my head that I can sense. I have very bad head tremors and about a
dozen psychaitaric labels. I have had tinnitus for years and it has
now progressed to a continuous buzziing in the brain. I have been to
local ER's 5 times trying to get help and tested and treat for pssible
herpes encephalitis and get discharged with more psych label diagnoses
and not tested or treated for encephalitis even though I show them my
high antibodies report.
