From: dawn on 13 Feb 2006 14:39 I am taking a class about FMS. When it came to subject of pain she said people with FMS should maybe and a big MAYBE take oxy only when and if pain is severe and then get off as fast as you can. I take oxy and explained to her about back surgeries and scarring, she said she understood why I have to take it. My doc disagees with her, he said he perscribes it from FMS if it is warranted. In my case he feels it is warranted. What are the groups thoughts on this, Dawn
From: carolj on 13 Feb 2006 16:04 Well, my thoughts on it are this.......I think it CAN be a very addicting drug. However, if a person can't get their pain level down to a level that allows them to live their life.........then what difference does it make? I mean really, isn't it just as important to be as free from pain as we can get so we can still be a functioning member of society and our families? I don't take it, don't need anything near that strong and hope I never do but I sure would if I needed to. Carol J

I ended up being VERY addicted to it. It was HELL getting off of it. But, I've got an addictive personality, and I know that others take it w/success. -- ?.??? ?)) -:?:- ?.?? .????)) The real problem with this type of med though is that it directly affects the digestive system, and "manual" management, via laxatives etc. may very well be required. For this reason alone, I'd not be considering it as a long term solution, at least not without regular alternate meds breaks. Having said that, Elaine seems to have balanced things quite effectively with her prescription, though we are still looking to replace Oxy with something that will give her back full "operation" of her digestive system. The concerns about "addiction" are only a problem if overdosing is achieved, and the person taking it has an "addictive" personality. For those with the pain to "use" the medication, "dependancy" is more likely, but not that much from what I've read about. If Oxy is decided on, expect a period of time to adjust to it, starting with a lower dose than seems required, and working it up gradually until that balance is found. Be aware that at doses like 80mg, breathing can be affected. Hope this helps some. Then I showed her the printout and that she wrote the script! My thought is if you can get out of most of my pain or even half I could function more! |
