From: Diane on 2 Aug 2008 13:50 I finally heard from Kate and I think we were right to be worried about her. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it sounds like she broke her leg again and had two more surgeries. She spend time in the trauma unit and then a month and a half in rehab. Now she's home trying to hobble around cleaning up after neglected kitties and sounding very down. I'm worried about her. I hope she'll feel up to coming to ASA soon. she definitely needs our support. She also said her new phone ate everyone's phone numbers so that's why she wasn't in touch. diane

Here's a long, pertinent quote from her email "i was supposed to have had a lot of fun with house full of rotating company for two months this summer. but my best laid plans sort of rolled off a 7 foot berm, then bounced/rolled down about 7 or 8 large stone steps (that i built 15 years ago) and about 30 more feet of sloping lawn. "tuck and roll" saved my head and my wrists, but not my femur--which broke on the very last roll and pissed me off cuz i did everything right to protect myself. the toe of my shoe caught in the sod on my last roll, or i would have had just a few scratches. darn near spiral broke the femur, but in just 2 new places, and rebreaks of all the 37 year old car wreck breaks (that turned out to have never healed completely as was thought, when the metal rod was removed in '78--there was just a thin shell around the breaks and a small bridge. and boy, was i surprised by that news and wondered how it didn't rebreak all those 30 years, apparently radiology in '78 didn't show what mri's can about how thin the bone growth really was.). had 2 operations on that femur this time. one about the 17th or 19th and again on the 21st of june (was too juiced with dilaudid to remember exactly when). my femur now has 2 rods (one in the hip) and a hurking large screw for the knee area (3 new surgical scars--vying for a bride of frankenstein role). i've been in trauma care for about a week or so and then in a rehab facility all this time. that rehab place was gorgeous and the entire staff (right down to housekeeping staff) was incredibly endearing, amazingly attentive and in tune with my needs (i had so many hugs on the way out that it felt like i was leaving family behind)--great place and people, though i couldn't help thinking that hell could easily be beautifully decorated by laura ashley too (if one didn't want to accept the need for being there). i worked hard; so did my therapists and two courses of abx to nip an infection in the budding stage. am now home a month sooner than my surgeon and the staff thought i'd be when i first got there--had been told i'd be home on a walker with home health care in about 2 to 3 months from the date of injury. not. am home on my cane and with out-patient physical therapy. but truthfully, i know i couldn't accomplish all that again, even if i tried. i'm simply getting too old for this "falling star" stuff."
