According to the bill's sponsors and a wide coalition of consumers, physicians, nutritional practitioners and producers of supplements, the FDA has been keeping vital health information from the public by insisting that only medicines, not foods, can claim to have any influence on disease. This position has long been shown to be scientifically untenable but is held in place by pressures on the agency brought by pharmaceutical producers. Because of the FDA's censorship of truthful health claims, millions of Americans may suffer with diseases and other health care problems they may have avoided by using dietary supplements. For example, the FDA prohibited consumers from learning how folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects for four years after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended every woman of childbearing age take folic acid supplements to reduce neural tube defects. This FDA action contributed to an estimated 10,000 cases of preventable neutral tube defects!

The FDA also continues to prohibit consumers from learning about the scientific evidence that glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis; that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of sudden death heart attack; and that calcium may reduce the risk of bone fractures. (Congressman Paul in his introductory speech) Medical News Today has the details: Cleveland, OH (AHN) - Research spearheaded by Steven E. Nissen, M.D., Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Coordinating Center at The Cleveland Clinic, has discovered that a new generation of drugs, intended to inhibit the buildup of plaque in arteries, is ineffective. Pactimibe, the first ACAT inhibitor or plaque-deterring drug to reach phase III trials, was found not only to be ineffective in reducing the progression of coronary artery disease, but also in some cases to even promote it. Researchers had hoped this drug would signal a new era in treating coronary artery disease since the introduction of statins, a class of drugs that blocks the production of cholesterol in the liver. "While the results are disappointing, we did come away with several important conclusions," Dr. Nissen said. "A number of drugs in this class are under development and while they are promising, in this study Pactimibe didn't work. It is better to know now that researchers need to reexamine the safety profile of this class of drugs and perhaps even redirect their strategies." Coronary artery disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Since the introduction of statins in 1987, there have not been significant advances in drug treatments for the disease. (end of article. source: allheadlines.com) My comment: This is just another drug that turns out - after FDA approval - to have been "not really up to snuff". But why do we need a new drug at all? If heart disease is nutrition-related, as seems to be the case, why can we not just supply the proper nutrients for our bodies to do their routine repair work? You guessed it: There's no profit in it for pharma. That is why we will have drug after drug - one less effective than the other - because we are working stuck in a drug paradigm. Give the body the nutrients it needs and it will be well. Fill it full of drugs and it will be full of problems. (NCF) considers the most important research into CFIDS/ME (Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) needs your help! Researchers hoping to identify what could be the cause of this disease will find their work made much easier with samples from patients who have been diagnosed with CFIDS/ME. If you have a medical procedure that is upcoming, please consider helping research progress with a donation of: 1. A sample from a bone marrow biopsy 2. A sample of spinal tap fluid 3. Tissue samples affixed to a slide with paraffin However, under no circumstances does the NCF recommend that you have any procedure for this cause!
