And depression is a biochemical problem. Sometimes people need to take
medication to be able to gain a healthier perspective on life. To say
"smile and there will be something to smile about" is downplaying and
denying those people's suffering. That might work for you, but that does
not mean it will work for the next person. Personally I find that
signature line horrendous and obnoxious and unpleasant.

I've been diagnosed with depression and PTSD.

I find Nancy's sig line to be mildly amusing and rather enjoy it. I
hope Nancy continues to use it, as a mild reminder to look for
things in life to smile about.

If someone has a problem with reading that sig line, it's far better
that they take responsibility for their own behaviour and take
action to avoid it rather than demanding that the world change to
suit them. Expecting the world to accomondate one's own pathology is
one sure way never to improve one's mental health, as it is a quite
inappropriate expectation.

There's been several studies that show that if people force
themselves to smile, even if it's a fake smile, ti does work to lift
their mood. Even people who have been diagnosed with depression. So
many therapists suggest making a practice of smiling to their
clients as one strategy to help them cope more easily with depression.

I realize that your therapist may not be up to date and you may not
have a choice in therapists due to your financial rroblems. However,
you could do some reading on the web to help supplement your
therapist's advice.
