From: Minnesota Dan on 1 Nov 2005 17:54 I am just passing my one-month date for ileostomy surgery and am looking for anyone who is a lap swimmer and for anyone who regularly lifts weights. I was very active with both prior to my surgery, and am interested in getting active again. In addition to my ileostomy device, I have a rectal fistula that has to be addressed as well. Thanks for you input in advance.

In addition to my ileostomy device, well I'm not into lifting weights but try to swim a kilometer before work in the morning, would do more but don't have enough time. so what do you want to know? I started back swimming 5 months after my surgery, probably could have started sooner but they were building a new pool. in any case it was mind blowing how weak I had become, could barely do a lap. slowly built back up. found the Breast stroke to be easier to start with. to get on to the subject your worried about, I leave my belt on while swimming, and empty before starting and usually as soon as I finish (it seems to get me a little more active, but I have an illialconduit rather than a straight ileostomy but is in the same location) I found a one piece bag to work a little better for me but that is a personal choice. I wear a nike racing brief under my appliance and then wear a long leg racing suit over everything, gives me a little more support and is discrete. never had it come loose while swimming. hope that helps, for weight lifting your on your own.
