I recall a thread a while back about this. I certainly never expected to
be in this position, but...my 14 year-old SD has head lice. She's had
them for at least 2 months, maybe three, and has been being treated for
4-5 weeks. The lice persist. She's been treated twice - the first for
sure with Nix, the second time we assumed was Nix but are not sure at
this point.

I'm looking for any suggestions/advice from the NCP position. I guess
you can offer what the CP should be doing, but we have zero ability to
even suggest. We have SD every other weekend, but Easter is an extra, so
we have her this weekend and will have her next weekend also.

Any advice would be appreciated.

They'll stick around if the house isn't being properly treated for them. They
will be in her bed, on the furniture, everyplace, and it all needs to be
treated.

If she's being repeatedly treated with those louse shampoos, keep an eye on
her health. Some of them are organophosphates; they work, but they're very
toxic and shouldn't be used more than a couple times within a short period of
time.

I don't know what to tell you; it's out of your control, unless you can get
the CP to let her stay at your house while they get their home under control.

Interesting topic... :) never experienced such in all my years. But,
can equate "bed bugs" in my childhood. <grr>

There's two ways in which she's become infected; your home, her bedroom
is infested or another house she frequents and or she's using another's
head care products. Until that's determined, at best, it's going to be
a struggle to rid her of them.

I'm going to go with a 14 year old doesn't really like having them. So I
would probably, in your situation, go with educating her about them and how
to get rid of them. In this instance, pressure from SD on her mother will
probably do what pressure from you will not.

I'd also have your husband talk to her pediatrician about it.

So she's been out of school for 4-5 weeks? Gadzooks, that's really bad. Or
just sent home with a recurrence?

I actually went through a very similar situation years ago. My
stepdaughter was 4 at the time. For months she came over with lice
and every time we spent money on lice treatments and tried to cure
it. It eventually got so bad that as soon as her and her brother
would get to our house we stripped them of their coats and all clothes
and had them bathe and washed their clothes in hot water and put them
into plastic sealed bags after they were dry (the clothes!-not the
kids) We shaved the boys head, but for the girl we spent hours each
time combing all nits and lice out of her head. She was infested each
time very badly! Finally it got to the point where the stepdaughter
started losing patches of hair. So, we talked to the mom and told her
that we were keeping the kids for 2 weeks and during that time she
needed to completely rid her house of those lice! (we suggested
throwing out all stuffed animals, washing all clothing and bedding in
hot water, buying the lice spray for beds and furniture, steam
cleaning all carpets, etc.) At first their mom freaked out and denyed
the lice problem, but when we threatened to call DCFS she gave in.
She did get rid of the lice, and my stepdaughters hair grew back.
