From: DeeTee on 5 Aug 2008 13:23 [I just copied and pasted from my live journal blog so sorry if it's a little 'dumbed down' for the medically savvy people here. Just didn't feel like retyping.] Well, the second blood test came back still too high so now I have been declared hypothyroid. That means my thyroid is not putting out as much hormone as it should and that my metabolism is too sluggish for my safety. I start on Synthroid tomorrow. It may help me lose weight, and I'm all for that!! LOL Apparently there are all kinds of bad stuff that can happen if this is not addressed, so I'm glad our family doctor was on top of it. It would explain the brittle nails, low temperature (I seldom get above 97.3), and the sensitivity to cold (I always thought it was just the arthritis). She had mentioned once before that she was concerned about my "normal" temperature being so low, but we were always there for something else. She slipped the first thyroid test in with a batch of others that I have on a regular basis. It came back high so she ordered the second round for six weeks after. Now it's official and it's just a matter of finding the right dosage to correct the problem. I will be starting at a low dose of 25 mg once a day. Another blood test in 4 weeks. If it's still high, then they'll increase the dosage. If it's closer to normal, we'll stay at the same dose and redo the blood test a month later. We'll keep this up until the right dose is reached and that's what I'll take from now on. Just what I needed, right? On a brighter note - the DH has gotten nothing but good news from his doctors. The liver biopsy showed his liver was in really good shape, which means his medication is doing it's job. Unfortunately, the Hepatitis B virus is still in there and probably will be always. That's why he has to take the medication...to keep it from damaging the liver. He has another blood test and ultrasound in 6 months. His A1C came back in the really good range so his diabetes is being adequately controlled by his diet. He has been told to exercise more, though, to get his good cholesterol up to a higher level. He's disgustingly healthy. LOL DeeTee
