From: Executive Crackhead on 8 Oct 2005 10:22 Hello friends. We recently took our son to see a nutrionist / DAN! doctor; he recommended we get a Ion Profile done by Metametrix. We have the kit, but haven't taken him to the lab to get any of the samples drawn; the test is expensive, nearly $700. I'm curious is anyone has had any experience getting an ion profile test done on their autistic child, and if so, did it provide any useful information? We are desperate to try things to help our son, but also want to be careful not to be taken in by our desperatness to just try anything. Thanks in advance! - ec

What those tests are going to tell you, you can find out better at home: try eliminating gluten, then try eliminating casein. Add B6 and magnesium supplements to his diet. You don't need expensive tests to try things out, and the tests won't tell you anything for sure, anyway. It's much better to try things yourself to find out what helps your child. Just my $.02 worth. :-) Chak -- First say to yourself what you would be, then do what you have to do. -- Epictetus

They are actually an organization with an empasis on research and strong science rather than "snake oil" or "mysticism" Many of the doctors and researchers involved in DAN are parents or grandparents of autistics themselves and became involved while trying to find things to help their own loved ones. While there are definitely unethical people out there, there are also very solid, committed people whose lives are dedicated to making the lives of autistics and their families better. If the message were really that autistics had no right to exist, why would they be working so hard to improve those same lives? If anyone had no right to care for a child it would be the person who would sit back and do nothing to treat their childs medical disorder or not do everything they possibly could to ensure that their child had the best, happiest possible life that they could, autistic or not. Why is it that if your child has some other medical condition (say diabetes) it would be neglectful not to "put them through" the necessary treatments, but if your child is autistic then dealing with that from a biomedical approach is somehow cruel? Hi Dear Mandy,,, your children are more than likely "Young" what ever gains they make in their maturation progress, will be suspect because there are no studies done on the untreated with Dan Vitamins and the Treated with Dan Vitamins, It would have to be a wide scale study in children... My children both dxed pdd-nos made fantastic Gains------- With No Dan treatment--- I say this because,,,,, Logic Tells Us that when Children are Dxed at a very Young age they are not in a Finite State........ In My opinion from watching kids on the spectrum grow and learn,, No One,,,, No One I repeat has any grasp on what their kids will be like in 5 years.... Vitamins do Not fix Neurological problems end of story,, Unless you have severe and I mean Severe vitamin deficiencies,,, Ever heard of vitamin C deficiency or Thiamine Deficiency? Those Are Very Very rare in this day and age unless you are in a Third World country or something.... Bottom Line,,,, You people that buy in to this Dan stuff are getting Ripped Off.. V.

Parents can be misled just as easy as any population, especially when the parent would cut off their right arm to "Save" their Child. Regardless of the fact that Some one is making "Big Bucks" off their gullibility. Just because someone is a "Parent" or a "Doctor" doesn't exempt them from "Accountability". Many kids on the spectrum will change and change dramatically with no bio treatment,,, some of those kids will remain severely autistic without bio treatment.... some will gain Language and social skills with out Bio treatment,,,,, Autism is a neurological configuration of the "Brain and nervous system" Just as Mental Retardation is or Dyslexia or Face Blindness or Color Blindness" It would take literally a Brain transplant to fundamentally Change A person with these sorts of conditions. Thing is "Parents are unwilling to Accept the Realities of Life on Life's terms" This is not to say that parents should not "Try" and Educate their kids so that they can reach what ever potential that they have but the reality is some "Kids" will be subjected to All sorts of would be cures whether it be ABA or vitamins or what ever and the Kids will still be either limited or unlimited by their brains makeup and capacity. No One has predictors on who the children will be that present with a more pronounced form of Autism and Autism that is less Pronounced in certain areas until the kids are older and they have matured as much as possible within given parameters. You cannot equate Autism to a Disease as this is not Science and that is what people like Dan promote Autism as "A Disease" It is not a "Disease" this is where the Dan theories fall down.... Point is no matter if I tell you all this you probably won't believe me..... Thing is I have been a parent who having run my own "parents autism support group" and been to many conferences and Drs and read many books on the subject and have observed all kinds of kids on the spectrum and what treatments they have had and haven't and seen things make very little difference and parents mortgaging their homes and spending count less hours and money investing into the Latest and greatest would be cure ,,, I have no validity at all,,, my opinion means nothing eh? Ok, We are "All" going to do what we are going to do. But Some people may be still sitting on the Fence,,,, Now they Have tons of Parents egging them On to spend all their money or live with the Guilt that you didn't throw every dime you had to Cure this awful thing that is your child brain instead of taking the Lets wait and see approach.... Ah the Catch 22 of it all... I find it really, really disturbing that this Dan stuff has taken a Foot hold into the Autism Arena...... And it's practices are just taken at face value because "After all, they are these "Loving Parents" Now If they find a cure for Acne I will applaud them,,, how about the common cold or Aids.... But they won't cause they are using the Vitamin approach and it simply doesn't work.... V. |
